REGULAR MEETING OF THE
LAFAYETTE PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD
4:00 pm
17 May 2021
The City of Lafayette Parks and Recreation Board met in regular meeting at 4:00pm, May 17,
2021. The meeting was held at Rush Pavilion in Columbian Park.
The meeting was called to order by Park Board President, Maurie Denney. Board members
present were Dave Mecklenburg and Matt Metzger. Park Superintendent Claudine Laufman,
Parks Director of Operations Jon Miner, Zoo Director Neil Dale, Marketing Manager Samantha
Haville, McAllister Recreation Center Assistant Manager Emily Butler, Maintenance Manager
Mike Perry, Security Director Kurt Wolf and Recording Secretary Jenny Spencer were also
present.
Upon motion by Mr. Metzger, seconded by Mr. Mecklenburg, and unanimously carried, minutes
of the April 19, 2021 Parks Board meeting were approved.
Upon motion of Mr. Mecklenburg, seconded by Mr. Metzger, and unanimously carried, General
Fund Claims in the amount of $28,170.99, Non-Reverting Fund Claims in the amount of
$24,234.71 for a total of $52,405.70 were approved.
Superintendent’s Report
Zoo Director Neil Dale provided an update on Zoo Memberships. To date, over
1600 memberships have been sold. Gift shop revenue as of May 15 was $60,500,
compared to $20,109 in 2019.
Director of Operations Miner presented the Loeb Stadium update. Punch list
items are being addressed with JR Kelly. Suite furnishings are arriving. Monitors
for concessions and suites are being installed tomorrow. Trash cans and recycling
bins have arrived. Mr. Miner also updated on special events and outside athletic
teams being held at Loeb and scheduled for June. Director of Operations Miner
also provided an update on Aquatics. Orientation began for managerial staff
earlier, and training begins this week with an in-service at the Jefferson High
School pool. Upon a question from Mr. Mecklenburg regarding foul balls at
Loeb, a discussion ensued pertaining to retrieval of balls hit outside the park.
Parks Superintendent Laufman provided an update on Memorial Island. The
retaining wall is being finished. The trees and miscellaneous piping saved for fish
habitat have been installed. Sound equipment is being tested at Memorial Island.
Lighting panel and theatre seating have arrived and being installed. The Carousel
update included an update on the punch list wrap up for the building. There are
some concrete issues. The Carousel manufacturer is working through the design.
Marketing Manager Haville provided the marketing update. Mr. Miner had an
interview with Greater Lafayette magazine. Zoo staff participated in the “Inside

Our Towns” podcast with Shamus. WLFI covered the return of the train engine
to Columbian Park. Ms. Haville also provided updated numbers for Social Media
use, which continue to see significant increases.
Upon motion of Mr. Metzger, seconded by Mr. Mecklenburg (see attachment A) and
unanimously carried, a goat from Columbian Park Zoo was declared Surplus Property.

There being no further business to come before the Board, on motion of Mr. Metzger, seconded
by Mr. Mecklenburg, and unanimously carried, the meeting adjourned at 4:28 pm.
