REGULAR MEETING OF THE LAFAYETTE PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD 4:00 pm 17 April 2023 The City of Lafayette Parks and Recreation Board met in regular meeting at 4:00pm, April 17, 2023. The meeting was held at Rush Pavilion in Columbian Park. The meeting was called to order by Park Board President Matt Metzger. Board members present were Maurie Denney, Dave Mecklenburg and Siany Molina. Parks Superintendent Claudine Laufman and Parks Director of Operations Jon Miner and Recording Secretary Jenny Spencer were present. Parks staff members present were Mike Perry, Neil Dale, Samantha Haville and Kurt Wolf. Upon motion by Mr. Denney, seconded by Mr. Mecklenburg, and unanimously carried, minutes of the April 17, 2023 Parks Board meeting were approved with scrivener’s error correction. Upon motion of Mr. Denney seconded by Ms. Molina, and carried with Mr. Mecklenburg’s abstention, General Fund Claims in the amount of $40,379.97, Non-Reverting Fund Claims in the amount of $19,257.12 for a total of $57,637.09 were approved. Superintendent’s Report: • Security Director, Kurt Wolfe informed the Board of the hiring of the Assistant Security Director, Michael Jones, who will start tomorrow working the evening shift. • Marketing Manager, Samantha Haville shared the success of McAllister Recreation Center’s Spring Celebration and final Winter Market. Thirty vendors attended and more than seventy-five craft packets were given out to attending children. Summer Camp registration numbers at McAllister have started strong with 278 signed up to date. Seasonal hiring has been a challenge. McAllister’s first Mother Son Date Night will be held on May 13 with fun activities like laser tag and board games. Ms. Haville also shared that ticket sales for the upcoming Air Supply concert at Loeb Stadium have exceeded 2100. • Zoo Director, Neil Dale provided details of a successful opening day. Gift shop sales were robust, and tickets for feeding the goats and train rides numbered 397 and 443 respectively. The penguins put on a great show. The mosquito abatement systems are in place. Zoo Summer Camps are almost full. Schools on Safari start tomorrow with 270 scheduled. • Director of Operations Jon Miner provided an aquatics update. A lifeguard certification class was just completed with 16/20 becoming certified. At this point we have fifty-four lifeguards hired. Seasonal hiring is slow across the board. Maintenance staff is doing repairs in the pump houses and power washing. The bathroom floors at Vinton pool are being replaced this year. Aquatics Management staff will start May 8. Park Board Minutes 4/17/2023 Page 1 • Superintendent Laufman gave a project update: - Zoo Commissary Design project continues to meet bi-weekly with progress. - Kettlehut was the sole bidder for CMC contract. - McCaw Park construction fence went up. Staff working with pickleballers to keep everyone happy. A temporary construction only access road will be built. Work will be done to create a paved pathway. Renew will be working on future site of restroom building. - Columbian Park restroom building update: We are still waiting on a part for the door. But the building can be open without it. The sidewalks are almost complete and the curb installation is beginning. - Irrigation around Memorial Island is being installed and being paid for out of TIF funds. Communications: • Board: Mr. Mecklenburg had a question regarding the dedication of the All-Inclusive Field at CAT Park. A discussion followed regarding the Tippy Stars and Lafayette Youth Baseball. Mr. Denney raised a question about the Loeb Stadium scoreboard.
