Closing Statement (4 minutes) 12  Friday, January 13, 2022 To the Members of the City Council: I would like to be considered for Linda Farmer's seat on the City Council. I confirm that I am a current resident of Lakewood. I have lived here since 1972, growing up playing on Charles Rough's farm off of Bridgeport, and attending the Montessori preschool in Oakbrook, Dower Elementary and Charles Wright Academy before getting my undergraduate degree at Brown University in Rhode Island, and my master's and doctorate at the University of Washington in Seattle. Raised here since I was a very small child, I am strongly connected to Lakewood and would like the chance to help insure that it remains a beautiful, healthy and inviting place to live, while welcoming new faces and accommodating quality affordable housing and economic opportunities for its people. Over the last few years I have demonstrated my commitment to Lakewood and its interests. Since March 2021, I have been a member of the City's Landmarks and Heritage Advisory Board, and I am currently its vice-chair. I have been an active campaigner for the City’s environment, helping to highlight the importance of the urban tree canopy, with particular emphasis on Garry oaks. One of my strong points is my ability to find a common language with people having a variety of perspectives, from all walks of life. I honed these skills for over a decade working for foreign correspondents in Europe, when I arranged and interpreted during interviews, whose subjects ranged from coal miners to government ministers, from retirees to a Nobel laureate. More recently, I have put these skills to use in my meetings with the Lakewood Water District's board of commissioners, library system director, scientists and researchers, non-profit leaders, elected representatives, government employees from all levels and a large number of people from across Lakewood's cultural and political landscape. I believe my sincere interest in this city's well-being, combined with those communication skills, natural curiosity and extensive academic preparation in research and critical thinking, would make me well-suited to the tasks facing a city council member. In addition, my years spent in other cities and cultures would provide the insights of an outsider "on the inside". Not long ago, I wondered why I never put my name in a ballot, why I was always in the background. About three years ago, I invested my personal time looking at Offices or positions I could run for. As with so many others, the money required to run a successful campaign precluded this. Then, this path was put before me. I have been a resident of Lakewood, consistently, since February 2012. Lately, it seems crime and homelessness have gotten worse, far worse than I can live with. I believe if I can be appointed to this seat I can facilitate laws and ordinances to combat aggressive lawlessness and lessen some of the suffering I see - DAILY. Given the rise in drug use and abuse, a more consist form of intervention will be required, in conjunction with defined paths to success. The City of Lakewood could be that place where the right formula can be attained. I can’t promise that I would remain on the Council, I understand the seat is up for reelection in a few months. Later both were found to be unsatisfactory. PRESENT - Have attended every Advisory Board and every Neighborhood Association meeting in the past. I am aware councilmembers express concern about the diversity of the Council. No councilmember has ever been selected from the Springbrook neighborhood. This could be finally addressed. Have worked with numerous elected officials; local, county, district, state and federal. VISION - + Mil-to-vet local transitional resources + Workshop and implement homeless outreach stand-downs + Author weekly podcast/video historical reports + Implement safety measures at traffic hotspots + Shadow City departments, create and bolster City volunteer options + Incentivize recreational attractions, go from fireworks to drone light shows, for example + Create Small Business Nursery Zone + Enable Neighborhood Associations of all six districts and facilitate networking among them. Solidify back-and-forth dialogue, petitions with residents. Create target task force for troublesome apartment residences. Deny slumlord owners of having multiple properties and discourage offshore property ownership. On council, I can accomplish this in a single year. I am retired and will devote myself to seeing Lakewood lead. But I realize no man is an island. Let’s make Lakewood a world-class leader.
