Project Status Update – Mr. Jay Meister and Mr. Mark Baumgart Mr. Mark Baumgart, Gwinnett County gave the presentation regarding the Hooper-Renwick Themed Library building. The project is going well and on schedule. Mr. Baumgart shared a few update photos with the Committee on the construction of the building. The concrete slab was being poured today. They have started on the mechanical, electrical, and the plumbing. They are still expecting the completion date to be in April 2025. 6. Project Status Update – Mrs. Cammie Mansfield Mrs. Cammie Mansfield, Gwinnett County introduced Jason Hewitt as her newest staff member. He is joining the County from Savannah where he worked with several of the historic locations there. They are continuing with oral histories - James Tench and Mr. Tucker. They are also continuing to work on placing of the artifacts. They will be finalizing the graphics over the next couple of months. They have started working with the media consultant for the exhibit. Mrs. Mansfield shared some slides with the Committee which gave everyone an idea of what the media exhibits might look like. Each section is color coded so everyone can find where they are along the timeline. All oral histories will be available, but each section will have four to five oral histories that will be spotlighted. Questions are being added so guests of the exhibit may give parts of their story. They will monitor the responses to make sure they are appropriate and they are considering giving them an opportunity for open ended answers. Another option would be multiple choice options. This option would allow them to count the number of people that chose which answer. After you answer the question it would show how many people answered the way you answered. Mrs. Mansfield asked the Committee Members to reach out to her if they have any particular questions they think should be included. There will be four questions per section. Committee Member Maxey - asked what is the goal of the questions. Mrs. Mansfield said the goal is to help them make a connection to the exhibit. Chairwoman Brown asked who will monitor the answers since some may not be appropriate. Mrs. Mansfield said that the top answers would not be displayed until they are reviewed. She said they are leaning more towards the multi-choice questions. Committee Member Summerour-Daniel asked if this is an engagement piece or collecting data. Mrs. Mansfield said the questions are for assisting the guests to dig deeper into the topic. Relative Scale is the media company and they were chosen by Healey Kohler. They have been meeting for about a month to get this started. Committee Member Maxey, Committee Member Moore, Committee Member Brown Taylor and Daniel are interested in being on a sub-committee to assist with the exhibit details. Mrs. Mansfield said they are creating a script for the transportation video. What the bus was like, experience of those that walked to school, relying heavily on oral histories - may do additional interviews to get more detail. Include introduction to school buses, experience being picked up by the bus, what it was like riding the bus, what did the bus look like, trying to incorporate crossing guard story and what it was like walking to school. The sub committee could assist with helping to know of others that should be interviewed with more details. Mr. Chuck Warbington mentioned that a shorter version of the oral histories would be a good idea for those that are not able to listen to the entire oral history. Committee Member Bailey said that churches used to have various publications it might be good to reach out to them. Mr. Warbington confirmed that it is okay to use photos from somewhere other than Hooper- Renwick photos if one of those are not located. Committee Member Dunnigan recommended the Woodruff Library on the Atlanta University Campus as a possible research location. Mrs. Mansfield said the media group think it is best to have a website to house the oral histories. It would make it easier to locate specific people, topics, and to update various items. Mrs. Mansfield reviewed a list of sounds they are considering using in one of the areas. They will be removing the sound of chairs and desks sliding on linoleum from the options since the school did not have linoleum on the floors. It was encouraged by a few Committee Members to include these sounds: the Lord's Prayer, the National Anthem, music, and sounds from recess, the lunchroom, and basketball games (dribbling, whistles, buzzers). Mrs. Mansfield asked the Committee to search for various sounds online that are like they remembered from their school days and to forward these sounds to her - examples could be sounds of the school bell, basketball games, etc. Mrs. Mansfield mentioned the idea of having some mural imagery for some large photos for a blank wall in the exhibit. Pastor Dunnigan suggested they could use photos from the various school clusters. Mrs. Mansfield asked the Committee Members to send photos to her that might work for the mural August 1st. The photos sent by August 1st could be a photo of a photo, but they will need access to an original photo or it will not be able to be enlarged enough for the wall. 7.
