Animal Shelter Advisory Committee Monday, January 9, 2023 Regular Meeting Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center Committee Roll Call: Susanne Joosten Amy Potter Losh Jasmine O’Keefe Patricia Rytlewski Stacey Warner Assistant Chief Cliff Woitena Absent: Dr. Betsy Robinson Meeting was called to order at 6:19 p.m. AGENDA: New committee member, Patty Rytlewski, was introduced and reappointed members were welcomed back to the committee. A motion to appoint Susanne Joosten as committee vice-chair was made by Patricia and seconded by Amy. The motion passed unanimously. Monthly statistics and shelter update packet was received and reviewed. The committee requested to receive only the recent monthly statistics at each meeting and to receive the information packet prior to the meeting to review. Jasmine will provide the packet before the meeting if time allows. The packet will be included in the meeting minutes. Mara Hartsell, Shelter Support Advisor with American Pets Alive and Maddie’s Fund, reviewed her shelter assessment with the committee. Mara praised the shelter for impressive live release rates and the level of care the shelter provides to the animals. Discussions were held on behavioral plans and case management for dogs that have been in the shelter longer than 30 days. Recommendations were made to create communication logs for each dog so that all employees and volunteers are able to provide comments on their care and the need for a virtual fostering system that will promote social media exposure for the long-term dogs. Mara also recommended the use of a professional trainer for the aggressive dogs in the shelter. The trainer would help teach proper techniques for handling aggressive dogs. Stacy suggested that the committee appoint a Secretary position for the commission. This will be addressed at a later meeting.
