Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee

Meeting Agenda Minutes October 4, 2022 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. by Jackie Liddell. Present was Jackie Liddell, Nina Makepeace, Jason Makepeace, Richard Williams, Frank Zgonc, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, and Dave Bowman via zoom. Also present for the meeting was League City Executive Director Sarah Osborne and Parks Superintendent Cameron Parker No citizens were present to address the board. There were no minutes from the September meeting to approve as Osborne stated that she did not have the minutes typed up and that they would be ready for approval at the October meeting. League City Parks Superintendent Cameron Parker made a presentation regarding the upcoming Fall Sweep on November 5, and what activities volunteers could partake in. Dave Bowman asked several questions that were answered by Parker. At 6p.m.—before the meeting—members of the committee did a site survey at a building owned by the Masonic Lodge to see if the building could be used as possible art gallery or studio space. The group discussed the pros and cons of “renting” the building out from the Masons to have an “art gallery” inside that could be open Thursday thru Sunday manned by volunteers and members of the Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation. They also discussed the possibility of using the Ghirardi House as a “artist in residence” studio space with artists getting free rent in exchange for teaching youth and adult art classes at the community center, having an open house/gallery show once a month, and being heavily involved in the non-profit foundation. The group did not take a formal vote but agreed that the Ghirardi House seemed like the better option to pursue. Osborne provided an update on The League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation which included the state officially accepting the name change and amendment to the non-profit’s purpose to include art. The current foundation board, which includes all League City Parks Board members, is still working on the bylaws, but Osborne stated that she felt confident that they would be approved at the foundation’s October meeting. The group reviewed the success of EcoFest and talked about what went well and what can be improved for next year. The group reviewed and discussed the September 27 City Council presentation made by KLCB Chair Jackie Liddell which highlighted the committee’s efforts over the last year as well as the progress and accomplishments of the City’s Public Art Initiative. Osborne reminded members of the committee who still needed to fill out the application to reapply for a position on the committee in 2023. Osborne updated the group on various city events coming up in October including Harvest Fest and the Dimond Ball on October 22. Part of the proceeds of the ball will go to the The League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation. Osborne provide an update on various City art projects including the status of all five boxes that are part of phase III of the mini-mural project and stated that the two new bronze dog statues were installed that morning by City crews—one at the Bark Park at Countryside and the other in front of the League City Animal Care and Adoption Center. Osborne updated the group on the Bay Area Veterans Quilt Project and informed them that about a dozen of the quilts would be displayed at the Civic Center in late October/early November and that allwould be distributed at League City’s annual Veterans Day ceremony/luncheon on November 11 at Hometown Heroes Recreation Center. The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
