Meeting Minutes May 2, 2023 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:02 PM by Jackie Liddell. Present were Richard Williams, Frank Zgonc, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, Jackie Liddell, Jill Reason, and Dave Bowman. Also present for the meeting was Director of Communications and Community Engagement Sarah Osborne and Parks Coordinator John Orsag. A motion to approve the minutes from the February 7 meeting was made by Richard Williams and seconded by Dave Bowman. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Osborne then led a discussion on another series of traffic box murals and wraps. Contract for the traffic box murals would be with Up Arts. The traffic box wraps are more complicated. Anyone in the community can submit a design. Osborne and Orsag will work on some criteria. The theme will be titled ‘League City Natural Assets,’ and the KLCB Committee would vote on the designs. Osborne next talked about the Park Dedication Fee Allotment. This is $150,000 set aside in park dedication fees to use for art in parks. The deadline to use the funds is September 30. Some examples of projects that have been done in other cities were the Baytown Sculpture Trail and The Woodlands Benches. The group also mentioned ideas such as murals in a park and sculptures that kids can climb on (dinosaur bone sculpture). The Committee thought that a field trip to Baytown to see the Sculpture Trail would be a good idea. Orsag then updated the group about the upcoming Wings Along the Water Event on Saturday, May 13, from 4-10 PM. The event will be held at Heritage Park and feature booths related to birding, food trucks, kayak rentals, crafts/games, art, and a showing of the movie ‘Angry Birds.’ There will also be thirty large photos of birds on display inside the Ghirardi House from local photographer John Steelman. Orsag updated the Committee on the next Art Gallery titled ‘The Art of Paper.’ The deadline to submit artwork is Friday, May 5, and the opening reception will be held at the Civic Center on Friday, May 26. We need volunteers to help hang all the artwork. The installation will be held at the Civic Center on May 15, 16, and 18, from 4-6 PM. The Committee was then updated on the White Linen Night Event by Sarah Osborne and Richard Williams. They stated that 128 artist applications had been received and that only 7 of them were rejected. The deadline for artist applications will be May 8. The next Event Meeting will be held at Butler’s Courtyard on May 9. Finally, the group discussed t-shirt sales and increased advertisements to the public regarding the event. Osborne gave an update on the Ghirardi House Artist in Residence Program. She is typing up notes to give to the Legal Department so they can then work on a contract/agreement. The Facilities Department still must remodel the house before artists can apply for the program, and the Ghirardi House is currently way down the list of projects to be completed. Several members of the Committee then provided comments to the group. Beth asked about the possibility of the Veteran’s Memorial at the Sportsplex being relocated to Hometown Heroes Park. She also mentioned that it would be nice to have Baseball sculptures added at the Sportsplex. Jackie then mentioned the upcoming League City Music Festival at Walter Hall Park. She told everyone that it would be a great idea to advertise the White Linen Night Event at the Music Festival. After the members were finished with their comments Orsag added that he held a workday event with the Galveston Bay Area Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists at the Dick Benoit Prairie Preserve on April 26. The group removed invasive species and performed plant identification for the INaturalist app. Orsag also mentioned that he held a tree giveaway for National Arbor Day on Friday, April 28, at the Library. Two hundred tree seedlings were handed out to members of the community. The meeting was adjourned at 7:44 PM.
