Animal Advisory Committee - Meeting Minutes Monday, April 24, 2023 Regular Meeting Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center Committee Roll Call: Susanne Joosten Amy Potter Losh Jasmine O’Keefe Patricia Rytlewski Dr. Betsy Robinson Assistant Chief Cliff Woitena Absent: Stacey Warner Meeting was called to order at 6:16 p.m. AGENDA: Jasmine provided a handout with February and March statistics and the shelter updates. The committee reviewed and discussed each section of the handout. A copy of the handout will be included in the meeting minutes. Discussion on the Advisory Committee Goals was pushed to the May meeting. Dr. Robinson informed the committee that she has cards that provide low-cost pet services. The cards can be handed out to pet owners during meetings or events. Amy spoke to the committee about the need to make the pets in foster care more available for adoptions on the weekends. No public comments. Staff are currently being trained on utilizing Shelterluv to expand data tracking for all community cats Current trap rental release has not been updated since 2008. It is now being reviewed and updated by the Legal department New protocols have been created and will be administered to staff for digital signatures A new pathway plan has been created for both adult and kitten intakes to easily identify outcomes GoodPup Shelter Program Virtual dog training at home and on-demand with flexible scheduling options Shelter partnerships receive the first week free and then pay a discounted weekly rate Can be used for adopters, fosters, pet pantry, etc. Scholarships can be purchased or donated Staff training scheduled for this week Case Management Study Meeting with Mara is scheduled for any last minute details Goal date is June 1st to start Specifics of the study 1:15 ratio rotation of one month per tech includes a specific schedule of task on four key functions similar to human services idea of continuity of care Goal is to undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the association between kennel technician staffing levels and animal health effects including but not limited to decreasing staff burnout, increasing animal outcomes, and decreasing animal stress. Hoping to formalize volunteers after first 6 month trial 13  Current Projects & Accomplishments Volunteer Classes for Green Level Hands-On Training Leo will be hosting classes for green level training to increase consistency in handling; goal date of June 1st Partnering with HR to encourage the importance of training Piloting texting volunteers weekly to fulfill shifts starting May 1st Piloting texting new volunteers to encourage next steps starting May 1st Created a walkie talkie check out station and online system Monthly newsletter template created, goal date for publishing June 1st TOP Dog classes begin April 25th and will be hosted every other Tuesday and Thursday by JO and LB with assistance from LH Created a year round volunteer "kudos" board Created volunteer coordinator checklist for daily, weekly, monthly and annual duties 49 applicants during the months of February and March. All have finished on-boarding and have been set to the “accepted” status General Personalized meeting and presentation on March 13th by BARC's Animal Shelter Manager Amelia and national certified behavioralist, Nancy about merging animal behavior training into kennel technician daily routines Jasmine presented on Maddie's Fund National Weekly Community Conversations on 3/20/23 with around 300 attendees Jasmine, LaKeisha, and Julie attended Animal Care Expo in April Drainage in yards are being completed Double gates are being replaced with single gates for ease of accessibility Got Skillz has resumed for all staff and is now a new virtual and hands on option FY24 budget has begun Departmental goals and objectives are being created (draft began March 15th) in order to provide focus, direction, and motivation for the department and staff. These goals are being created with the assistance of staff and based on national industry standards and best practices. Objectives will include short and long term goals, which will be measurable, and decision making will be evidence based and data driven. Topic: Using technology, boundaries, and clear expectations to create a foster program that works for the shelter, foster, and foster coordinator.
