Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee

Meeting Minutes November 5, 2024 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Beth Sears. Present were Dave Bowman, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, Jackie Liddell, Frank Zgonc, Jill Reason, and Richard Williams. Also present for the meeting was Communications and Community Engagement Director Sarah Osborne, Parks and Cultural Services Coordinator John Orsag, and CCISD Assistant Director of Visual and Performing Arts Stephanie Albert. Stephanie spoke for a few minutes during the Citizen Request to Address the Board. She spoke about ways that we could get more CCISD students involved with some of our City art initiatives, programs, and contests. Discussion went back and forth on how we can communicate with the students as well as their teachers. Stephanie will check with all the schools in League City and will start getting our art information out to each of the art teachers. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Dave Bowman and seconded by Frank Zgonc. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Richard and Sarah ŐĂǀĞĂŶƵƉĚĂƚĞŽŶƚŚĞsĞƚĞƌĂŶ͛ƐdžƉŽĂŶĚƌƚGallery. There will be 21 non-profit groups at the event. We will need help transporting the artwork and hanging the art show on November 7, 8, and 9, at the League City ŝǀŝĐĞŶƚĞƌ͘dŚĞsĞƚĞƌĂŶ͛ƐdžƉŽǁŝůůƚĂŬĞƉůĂĐĞŽŶEŽǀĞŵďĞƌ10 and 11, also at the League City Civic Center. The Galveston Daily News will come out to do interviews and take pictures before the event. Sarah next led a discussion about upcoming Civic Center Art Exhibits. From January ƚŽDĂƌĐŚǁŝůůďĞ͚^ŵĂůůtŽƌŬƐďLJ'ƌĞĂƚDŝŶĚƐ͛͘Currently, we only have 7-8 pieces that have been submitted. We will extend the deadline and include artwork that is 12x12 or smaller in size. Then from April to July will be an Art Show by Dickinson ISD. After that time there will be opportunities for some other types of Art Shows. Lisette talked about having Plein Air artists come out again to paint League City. That could be an exhibit for a couple of months later next year. Sarah then told the group about a Kendra Scott fundraiser that will take place at the Baybrook Mall location. The fundraiser will be held on December 13 (4 pm - 6 pm) and December 14 (2 pm - 4 pm). 20% of the proceeds will go to the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation. Sarah then had an update on City Art Projects. One traffic box wrap will need to be replaced on a traffic box that is in front of the Education Village. We will be working with Dickinson ISD in the Spring to have several traffic boxes wrapped with designs from students and teachers. The large mural at the corner of FM 518 and I-45 will begin in March 2025. The GoCanvus park product order will be delivered in late November. Once the benches and picnic tables arrive, we will need to meet with several artists to see how and when they can be painted. The WĂƌŬƐĞƉĂƌƚŵĞŶƚŝƐďƵŝůĚŝŶŐƚŚĞĨƌĂŵĞƐĨŽƌƚŚĞŵĞƚĂů͚ϭϬϬŝƌĚƐŽĨ'ĂůǀĞƐƚŽŶ ŽƵŶƚLJ͛ĂƌƚǁŽƌŬƐŝŐŶƐƚŚĂƚǁŝůůďĞŝŶƐƚĂůůĞĚĂƚƚŚĞEĂƚƵƌĞĞŶƚĞƌ͘dŚĞƌĞŝƐĂŶŽƚŚĞƌ mural project for a gas station on the corner of FM 518 and the feeder road. We are still on track to purchase 2 sculptures next year from the Baytown ACE District for Heritage Park and City Hall. Orsag next told the group about nature and conservation projects. He mentioned the following items, projects, activities, and events: - Benoit Prairie Preserve Workday with Master Naturalists: In early October removed invasive species such as Chinese Tallow Trees with the Galveston Bay Area Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists. - Plant Swap and Shop: In October we hosted the Bay Area Plant Exchange Swap and Shop Event in the Civic Center parking lot. - Eco Fest: On November 2 we hosted Eco Fest at the League City Community Center. This was a successful event with several educational classes, 20+ vendor booths, and a tree giveaway with over 400 trees. - HEB/KTB Grant: In early November we were awarded with a HEB/KTB Our Texas Our Future grant for $2,500. These funds will be used to purchase trees for an Earth Day tree giveaway in April 2025. - Texas Music Friendly Community Certification: We have formed our League City Music Advisory Committee and will have our first meeting in January. We will host a concert on April 26, and then be presented with our Texas Music Friendly Community Certification at the event.  - Wild Birds Unlimited: Meeting with Jeff at the Nature Center this month to find good locations for all our Bat Houses and Owl Boxes that we purchased from him earlier this year. - League City Garden Club Wildflower Planting: Later this month the City and the League City Garden Club will plant wildflowers at Hometown Heroes Park. They will have a large area of Bluebonnets, and another area full of several varieties of wildflowers. The City will also plant wildflowers in the median at the corner of SH 96 and SH 3. Dave suggested installing a couple of trash barrels around the City in high-traffic litter areas such as the Education Village. They would work like an adopt-a-barrel program, with Dave collecting the trash from the barrels 1-2 times a week. The group liked the idea, and John will get with Cameron to see if this is something that they can make happen. Sarah then updated everyone about the Artists in Residence Program. The program has been approved and signed off by City leaders. An article about the program will appear in the next edition of City Matters. The group would like to see application information go out over social media as well as directly to colleges, etc. The floor was then open for member comments. Dave said that he attended the free concert for the Southern Shanks Band at League Park and noted the small crowd was disappointing. Richard said that a volunteer at the League City Animal Shelter asked if artists would be interested in painting animal murals inside the animal shelter. Richard also stated that the 2-year terms for him and Frank will be expiring soon for the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation. This item will need to be placed on the next KLCB Meeting Agenda. Beth then mentioned that she would like to see more publicity for the Keep League City Beautiful Committee and all its programs. It would be a good idea to have a big banner created that could be hung at events. She also said that the Eagle Scout/Boy Scouts did a great job with the landscaping at the front of the Communications building. The meeting was adjourned at 7:11 PM.
