Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee

Meeting Minutes December 3, 2024 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Beth Sears. Present were Dave Bowman, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, Jackie Liddell, Frank Zgonc, and Todd Parker. Casey Richard arrived at 6:10 PM. Also present for the meeting was Communications and Community Engagement Director Sarah Osborne and Parks and Cultural Services Coordinator John Orsag. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Frank Zgonc and seconded by Dave Bowman. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Sarah gave a wrap-up on the Veteran’s Expo and Art Gallery. She said that everyone had great reviews about the event and the news coverage was excellent as well. All the exhibits and artwork were picked up by Friday afternoon. The League City Historical Society took the printed posters and mannequins to store for future use at their Museum. It’s uncertain if we will do this large-scale event again since it involves a lot of work on everyone’s part. Sarah then spoke about the reappointment of current KLCB Committee Members. She informed everyone that they had all made it through. The group then talked about the background check process as well as the need to provide social security numbers. Sarah and John led a discussion about the upcoming Civic Center Art Exhibit. From January to March, we will feature ‘Small Works by Great Minds’. Currently, we have 64 pieces that have been submitted. The submission deadline has been extended to December 20 and will now include artwork that is 12”x12” or smaller in size. The exhibit will be hung on Monday, January 6, starting at 9 AM. Still need to pick a date for the reception for the exhibit. Sarah will send an email out to the Committee members and John will send out an email to all the artists. Sarah and John then led a talk about publicity for the Keep League City Beautiful Committee and all its events. The group liked the idea of possibly promoting the concept of keeping League City beautiful. They also liked the idea of having decals on city vehicles and trash bins in parks. They could also give away bumper stickers to the public. The group also thought it would be nice to have a reusable banner for all the different events that are hosted. There could also be a mascot for the environment that the group could create. Sarah next had the group go through the nomination process for 2 soon-to-be expiring positions on the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation Board. The group needed to appoint 2 Keep League City Beautiful Committee members to serve on the Patrons Foundation Board. A motion to appoint Frank Zgonc to a 1-year term was made by Lisette McClung and seconded by Jackie Liddell. All present agreed to approve the motion. Then a motion to appoint Jill Reason to a 2-year term was made by Lisette McClung and seconded by Todd Parker. All present agreed to approve the motion. Sarah then had an update on City Art Projects. She showed the group a sneak peek of the Artists in Residence Program article coming out in the next City Matters publication. The website for the Artists in Residence Program has been completed, and the deadline to apply for the program will be February 14. It was then mentioned that the ‘100 Birds of Galveston County’ aluminum panels had been installed along the trail at the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center. The group was then reminded about the Kendra Scott fundraiser benefitting the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation. It will be held December 14, from 2 PM - 4 PM in the store. Individuals can also use a code for online purchases. This will be available all day on December 14 and December 15. John next told the group about nature and conservation projects. He mentioned the following items, activities, and events: - Texas Music Friendly Community Certification: We will have our first committee meeting on January 9. We will host a concert on April 26, and then be presented with our Texas Music Friendly Community Certification at the event.  - Wild Birds Unlimited: Met with Jeff at the Nature Center to select locations for all our Bat Houses and Owl Boxes that we purchased from him earlier this year. Marked all the installation locations and will get them up in the next couple of months. - League City Garden Club: The City and the League City Garden Club planted wildflowers at Hometown Heroes Park. There will be a large area of Bluebonnets, and another area full of several varieties of wildflowers. The City also planted wildflowers in the median at the corner of SH 96 and SH 3. - Milkweed Plants: We will be receiving free Milkweed plants from the Department of Agriculture. These 60 plants will be planted once they are received later this month. - Nature Center Planting Event: The Galveston Bay Foundation and the City of League City were supposed to host a Prairie Planting Event at the Nature Center on December 7, but it will be canceled due to the weather. The event has been rescheduled for January 4. - Mayor’s Monarch Pledge Certification: Completed the annual report for this certification. - Tree City USA Certification: Working on the annual report for this certification. The floor was then open for member comments. Jackie asked if we would still have concerts in League Park. Sarah said that we will continue to have the Folk Association performing at the park once a month. Lisette then let the group know that the Outdoor Painters Society is interested in an Art Exhibit for November and December 2025. It would also include January 2026. This would be a Plein Air Event titled Paint Clear Lake. Dave mentioned that the first meeting for the Clear Creek Environmental Foundation Clear Creek Cleanup was coming up this month. Beth let the group know about the Wreaths Across America Event taking place on December 14, at Fairview Cemetery. The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 PM.
