DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Carpenter reported on a patron complaint about Twilight posters in the young adult area of the Little Chute
library. Discussion followed. Carpenter reported on the ban of two residents from the Kimberly Municipal
Complex restrooms. Discussion followed.
Staff continues to work on processing new books purchased for the Kimberly collection. Extensive weeding also
continues in Kimberly. Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale in late May or early June to sell weeded
materials.
Carpenter reported that the federal grant to bring fiber to all public schools and libraries in Wisconsin has been
declined and will not occur. There have been no further updates on the status of LSTA grant funding for the
electronic doors at both locations.
Interviews of four candidates for the open Library Assistant position will take place February 17th and 21st.
Carpenter hopes to have someone in place to begin training mid-March.
The Friends of the Library (FOLKS) met February 11th. They will be investigating obtaining a 501(c)3 status in
order to help the library with grant applications and planned giving opportunities. FOLKS approved $755 to be
used for the Fox Cities Reads speaker fee, funds for staff t-shirts for Fox Cities Reads and the summer library
program, and $500 for the summer library program to be used for a performer or prizes, as well as continued
funding of the 3rd Thursday programs. Carpenter has established an email newsletter on behalf of FOLKS which
will be sent monthly or bi-monthly to FOLKS members to highlight upcoming programs, projects, and volunteer
opportunities.
February adult programming includes the Love to Knit group and Beading Basics. Hardginski and Carpenter met
with Al Schaefer to discuss opportunities to collaborate with staff, funding, PR and programs between
departments.
The planning project is underway with surveys of staff, library board, and library users. The library user survey
will be extended to run through February 22nd in order to gather additional input from the community. The
Planning Committee will have its first meeting with Rick Krumwiede on March 1st at 4:30 p.m. at the Little Chute
library.
Carpenter is working on the 2010 annual report. She will bring the completed report to the March meeting for
approval. Carpenter met with GB Office Systems to review contracts for office equipment and made some
adjustments to contracts for 2011. She will be meeting with Accent Business Solutions in February to review
copier needs for both locations.
An article about the Governor’s Budget Repair Bill, a report about Wisconsin public-sector workers being under-
compensated from the Economic Policy Institute, and an invitation to a workshop on creative fundraising were
shared with those present.
YOUTH SERVICES REPORT
Programming continues to be well-received. There was a great turnout (70) for the SpongeBob party in Kimberly
despite the bad weather. Kids enjoyed trivia, crafts, prizes, and games, and it was good to see some older
elementary kids in attendance. The after school Valentine’s program in Little Chute included a few silly love
stories, a sign language song, and a craft time of making a Valentine with foam stickers. There were 31 kids and
parents in attendance. Pooches & Page Turners continues to fill up each month and has been getting much
positive feedback from parents and their young readers.
Family Story Time returned this month. Youth staff decided not to offer an evening session due to low
attendance at the previous session. Spontaneous story times have been continued – when there are a few
families in the room, a short spur-of- the- moment story time is offered, when possible.
The movie Unstoppable will be shown on February 21 at 6 p.m. The program has been billed as a date night
movie with free popcorn and is open to teens and adults. The library hopes to offer more evening movie nights
to give teens and adults a chance for free night out.
Hardginski and Hasseler hosted the OWLS Summer Library Program Workshop in Kimberly on February 11.
Twenty librarians from the system met for a chance to exchange ideas. Our library will be partnering with
Seymour, Kaukauna, Clintonville, and Waupaca libraries in two OWLS grants to bring singer/storyteller Stuart
Stotts and juggler Dan Kirk to Kimberly-Little Chute for summer concerts. Staff will be sending out letters to local
businesses within the next few weeks seeking sponsorship of our other concerts and with SLP expenses in
general.
The youth department will be offering an Earth Day story time as part of a collaborative effort with Earth Day
Fox Valley 2011. Many local libraries, nature centers, and businesses form this group. The library also will be
partnering with the area nature centers to promote Passport to Nature again this summer. Families are
encouraged to spend time outdoors visiting the centers. The libraries will help promote the program and will in
turn receive a free program presented by a naturalist. We are also looking to partner with the Parks &
Recreation Departments on joint programming.
