statistics report was reviewed and discussed.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Carpenter reported on a patron complaint about inappropriate material being viewed on a public internet
computer in Little Chute. Discussion followed. Carpenter will prepare training for staff on this issue.
Materials from the Kimberly contingency fund order are still being processed. Anne Paterson, a cataloger from
OWLS, came to assist with the backlog and will return later this month to help complete the project. Weeding
continues in both locations, but may need to pause during the month of April due to staff vacations and
commitments to the Fox Cities Book Festival.
Carpenter provided an update on the electronic doors grant. Interviews were completed for the new Library
Assistant and training is underway. Evan Bend and Bradley Shipps from OWLS will be coming March 23, 2011 to
provide ebook training for staff. Carpenter attended an OWLS workshop on March 4th on creative thinking and
problem solving with Mary Ellyn Vicksta.
Book discussions have started for both Fox Cities Reads and Fox Cities Book Festival. Schedules for both can be
found online. Final information, including author biographies and a complete schedule, for the Book Festival is
not finalized yet. Carpenter expressed frustration, as the Festival web site manager, with the delay in
information this year.
The next 3rd Thursday program takes place on March 17th. Festival Foods will present “From Vine to Table” and is
donating all of the supplies for the program. The next FOLKS meeting is scheduled for April 1st, but may need to
be changed to later in the month.
The Planning Committee met March 1st and reviewed a standards evaluation, statistical comparisons, space
needs assessment, and staff and public surveys. Next steps for the Committee include: review the board survey,
draft an evaluation report, select people to interview, and decide how to run focus groups. The Committee’s
next meeting is March 16th.
Carpenter reported that the library will not participate in providing bus trips in partnership with the Outagamie
County Historical Society. Carpenter reported on the effect the Budget Repair Bill would have on staff, as well as
other concerns the upcoming budget brings for the library, including the possible repeal of maintenance of
effort. Carpenter reported on the Joint Library Agreement update. Both Village Boards have now discussed the
update and are scheduled to take action on it by the end of the month.
YOUTH SERVICES REPORT
March has been busy with story times, tours, and outreach. The average number of patrons for story time is 41
with the highest being 74. A number of preschools and Girl Scout troops have been coming in for tours. Hasseler
visited Woodland School for a Dr. Seuss presentation, and Hardginski is representing the library at Little Chute’s
English Language Learners Fair for middle and high school students and their families. Marisol Kuborn from the
Little Chute school district translated our spring handout into Spanish for the fair, and she will be available to do
additional translation work for the library.
In partnership with the Fox Cities Book Festival, the library is hosting three programs featuring the works of two
visiting authors. An Ivy + Bean party (author Annie Barrows) is on March 28 in Little Chute. Kids will get an
introduction to the books, as well as participate in a few science experiments. In April the library is hosting a
Lunch Bunch story time in Kimberly featuring the books of Nancy Carlson; families are invited to bring in a picnic
lunch to enjoy while listening. Families will then have the opportunity to meet Nancy Carlson on Monday, April
18 at 6 p.m. in Kimberly.
The library is partnering with The Learning Shop for an Earn & Learn fundraiser during April 10-16 (National
Library Week). Patrons will be encouraged to shop that week and mention Kimberly-Little Chute Library at
checkout. The library will then receive 20% of the week’s proceeds as a store credit. The Learning Shop recently
donated a second train top, so the credits will be used to purchase trains for Kimberly and to improve our music
and learning collections. A “wish list” at the store will also be created in case anyone would like to make a
purchase for the library that week. Trentlage asked that a formal thank you from the Library Board be sent to
The Learning Shop to share appreciation with their staff. Carpenter will draft a thank you and provide it to Moes.
March book displays include Think Spring and Cook Up Some Fun (featuring our newer cookbooks). Upcoming
movies include Tangled on March 29 in Little Chute, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
in Kimberly on April 25 as a No School Day program, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on April 26 in
Little Chute.
A three-week Book Babies story time will be offered in April for babies birth-24 months and their
parents/caregivers. Parents enjoy this opportunity to interact with their little one with stories, rhymes, and
music.
OLD BUSINESS
There was no old business to discuss.
NEW BUSINESS
Trentlage moved, seconded by Stangel, to approve the employment of Mary Wieczorek as the new Library
Assistant. Motion carried. The completed 2010 Annual Report was presented and discussed. Fuller moved,
seconded by Vander Velden, to approve the report. Motion carried.
Carpenter will be working on the Capital Improvement Plan for 2012-2017. It is likely that future goals will be
revisited and possibly changed in light of the current economic climate for the state of Wisconsin. The Plan will
be brought to the April meeting for discussion and approval.
A request for consideration was presented asking for funds to be allocated for a volunteer appreciation
luncheon during National Volunteer Week in April. Stangel moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to approve the
use of up to $200 from the Joint Library Trust Fund to be used for the luncheon. Motion carried. A request for
consideration was presented asking for funds to be allocated for a 2010 summer library program materials order
that was not shipped and invoiced until 2011. Stangel moved, seconded by Trentlage, to approve $368.15 from
the Joint Library Trust Fund to pay for the 2010 order. Motion carried.
A request for consideration was presented asking for a fines amnesty week to be held March 21-26, 2011 to
benefit Help for the Homeless. Patrons who bring in new hygiene products to donate to the program would
receive $1 off their fines for every item donated. Donated items would apply to fines only, not to lost or
damaged materials or bills. Fuller moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to approve fines amnesty week in
support of Help for the Homeless. Motion carried.
No additional items were offered for the April meeting agenda.
Trentlage moved, seconded by Fuller, to adjourn the meeting at 5:22 p.m. Motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Beth A. Carpenter
