Van Hoof Library in Little Chute. PRESENT: Sarah Dollevoet, Jim Hietpas, Jim Moes, Judy Stangel, Marcia Trentlage, Rose Vander Velden. OTHERS PRESENT: Beth Carpenter, Barbara Fleming. Trentlage moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to approve the minutes of the March 15, 2011 meeting. Motion carried. Stangel moved, seconded by Hietpas, to approve the March 2011 invoices. Motion carried. The March 2011 financial and statistics reports were discussed. Margi Fuller entered the meeting at 4:37 p.m. DIRECTOR’S REPORT Carpenter reported that two Kimberly patrons, Luis Cuevas and Jordan Bessett, were banned from the library due to repeated issues with destructive and disrespectful behavior. Discussion followed. Tamara Maxwell entered the meeting at 4:40 p.m. Library staff has been given steps to follow if illegal material is viewed on public Internet computers or if patrons come in to complain about such occurrences. Steps are based on information included in the Security Policy. Anne Paterson from OWLS will be assisting Carpenter with the Kimberly cataloging backlog. Carpenter hopes to have all of the materials processed by the end of April. Carpenter received notice that further LSTA funds will be released to the state, so it is possible that the electronic doors project may be possible after all. She will report further news as it arrives. Ebook training for staff will take place Thursday, April 21st as it was canceled last month due to a snowstorm. Supervisor meetings have resumed monthly. Carpenter attended an AAC meeting at OWLS on March 18th. One of the issues discussed was a cut in funding for online databases due to lower funding being provided to library systems in 2012. Mango Languages was discontinued. Carpenter would like to purchase materials for the collection to help fill the need for language learning options. Carpenter will be sitting in on an OWLS Directors online meeting on April 20th. The webinar will focus on local advocacy. Carpenter was invited to participate in an eBook Summit in Madison on May 4th and will be attending the Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries conference May 5th to 6th. She will present a session on Google tools at the conference. Adult programming taking place over the last month has been very popular. Programs included a wine and cheese tasting evening provided at no cost to the library by Festival Foods and a concert by The Honey Dewdrops. National Library Week and Fox Cities Book Festival author presentations went extremely well with visits from Luis Alberto Urrea, Frank Anderson, Sara Rath, Sandra Kring, Lesley Kagen, and Nancy Carlson. The next FOLKS meeting will take place on April 29th with a focus on advocacy for the library. FOLKS will explore obtaining a 501(c)3 status to assist the library with alternative funding options. The next 3rd Thursday program will take place May 19th at 6:30 p.m. in Little Chute. The topic will be “Organizing your Home, Mind, and Spirit through De-cluttering” presented by Sandra Peterson. Work continues on the planning project. Carpenter will be scheduling interviews with community leaders. Rick Krumwiede will conduct the interviews. Focus groups will also be scheduled in the coming month. Carpenter has met with copier vendors to examine upcoming needs and current contracts. Both agencies will be providing additional information and options in the near future. The library will be closed Friday, April 22nd. Carpenter shared a National Library Week editorial from State Superintendent Tony Evers. YOUTH SERVICES REPORT The last Pooches & Page Turners of the school year took place on April 9th with 25 children participating. The program will continue next Fall with a kick-off event scheduled for mid-August. We greatly appreciate our partnership with Compassionate Canines who volunteer to offer this popular program at the library. National Library Week was kicked off with a concert with Grampa Fred Turk, who entertained the crowd with fun songs and puppets. Children’s author Nancy Carlson also visited and encouraged kids to use their imaginations to create stories and art. An “Earn and Learn” fundraiser was held at The Learning Shop during National Library Week. Results from the store will be coming soon. An Earth Day program was held today as part of Fox Valley Earth Week. Special visits from the National Railroad Museum staff and Hands2Grow Puppets, as well as an after-school gardening story time are planned for May. Youth staff are scheduled visits to elementary and middle schools in May to promote the Summer Reading Program “One World, Many Stories.” Class visits to the library are also being scheduled. Registration for the program will begin May 16th. April is Culver’s Contest month, so kids are bringing in their drawings of favorite books to receive a coupon for a free scoop of custard. We will also be giving away 4 kid’s meal coupons at the end of the month by a random drawing of names of all children who participated in the program. Hardginski will participate in a day of Wakaheza training in May. This project helps individuals learn how to effectively respond to everyday stressful situations between people and how to prevent the situations from happening. The main focus will be on parent-child situations. Hardginski will then help conduct an OWLS workshop for member library staff later in the year. OLD BUSINESS There was no old business to discuss. NEW BUSINESS The 2012-2016 Capital Improvement Plan was presented and discussed. Fuller moved, seconded by Dollevoet, to approve the plan as presented. Motion carried.
