month: Corinne Herro, Ellen Gloudemans, and Lynn Niemuth. Six people were interviewed for the open Library

being scheduled and prepared.
The Assembly Committee on Urban and Local Affairs held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 288 on September
17th. Rick Krumwiede testified in support of the bill and other OWLS member library directors were able to
attend the hearing, as well. Walter Burkhalter has been hired as the new OWLS Director and will start Monday,
October 14th.
Carpenter reported on adult programming attendance and upcoming programs. Fox Cities Reads meeting
continue monthly as the committee closes in on the 2014 author & book selection. The Kimberly Library has had
a 2nd patron win a Kindle in The Year of Reading Dangerously adult reading program. Carpenter thanked OWLS
for sponsoring the program, which continues through the end of 2013. The next FOLKS meeting is scheduled for
October 1st at 5:00PM at the Little Chute Library. FOLKS will have a booth at the Kermis Dutch Festival on
September 21st. Talsma gave a brief report.
The new Village of Little Chute Administrator, James Fenlon, begins on September 30th and will meet with

the 2013 computer upgrade plan this week. Quotes on paperback shelving and other shelving updates included
in the CIP are still pending. Much of Carpenter’s time in the coming month will be spent on the Wisconsin
Library Association’s annual conference in her role as Conference Co-Chair. The conference will take place
October 22-25 in Green Bay.
YOUTH SERVICES REPORT
Hardginski was unable to attend the meeting, so Carpenter shared the Youth Services Report on her behalf. Fall
programming is underway with a good turnout for the first 2 weeks of story time. We average 30-40 participants
in Kimberly and over 50 in Little Chute. Jacqueline Herrick, a sign language student, started her 3 week classes
on sign language at the library – one for elementary kids and one for parents & babies. She is doing a
phenomenal job teaching signs and sharing information about deaf culture, as well.
A delayed Money Smart Week program was held in Kimberly after school with Cindi Witt from Capital Credit
Union, and an additional money management for kids program will be held in November with Northwestern
Mutual. We are glad to offer financial literacy for kids and appreciate our wonderful community volunteers. The
library will also receive a $500 grant from Edvest.
Hardginski attended a Brown Bag Youth Services meeting in Marion, as well as a workshop in Ripon about
stealth programming and ways to engage families and encourage use of the library without a big budget or a lot
of staff time. Information about upcoming programs was shared. Hardginski also met with vendors to select easy
non-fiction and high interest titles. She continues to weed and develop the youth collections.
OLD BUSINESS
Carpenter reported that no updates to the 2014 Budget were required at this time. She also reported that
Administrator Hammatt may be requesting that a 1% COLA be added to payroll, as well as slight adjustments to
benefits, but those adjustments had not been made at this time. Carpenter requested that the October meeting
of the Library Board be adjusted to accommodate timely response and approval of the 2014 Budget. Those
present concurred, and the Board decided to meet briefly on Tuesday, October 8, 4:30PM at the Kimberly
Library for review and approval of the budget and to hold their regular monthly business meeting on Monday,
October 21 at 4:30PM at the Kimberly Library for final budget approval based on the Joint Budget Hearing
scheduled for October 15th.
NEW BUSINESS
Carpenter presented updated job descriptions for library personnel. Most updates were minor, but required to
update references to the ILS software now used (Sierra, not Millennium). A new job description was also shared
for the position of Programming & Adult Services Librarian, which is needed to accompany the 2014 Budget
request. All position descriptions were reviewed and discussed. Hietpas moved, seconded by Graff, to approve
the job descriptions as presented. Motion carried.
