Motion carried. Vander Velden moved, seconded by Talsma, to approve the September 2013 invoices. Motion carried. Village of Little Chute Administrator James Fenlon entered the meeting at 4:40 p.m. The September financial and statistics reports were discussed. DIRECTOR’S REPORT Carpenter reported on challenges at the Little Chute Library regarding a homeless person, as well as a student who have been sleeping in the municipal building lobby. Library staff have been working closely with Fox Valley Metro PD and Village personnel to address the issue, which is in hand, and to create a list of resources for patrons in need. Carpenter expressed concern about Metro’s release of information regarding services being cut in the 2014 budget which affect the library. Administrator Fenlon reported that a media policy will be developed that will address these kinds of situations in the future. Rick Krumwiede, Director of the Outagamie Waupaca Library System, retired as of October 18th. His replacement, Walter Burkhalter is in place and will be visiting member libraries to learn more about our successes and challenges. Carpenter attended a webinar provided by OWLS about unemployment insurance and the Affordable Care Act and how libraries are addressing these needs for patrons. An informational page has been added to the library website to assist staff and patrons with the ACA. A report was provided on past and upcoming adult programming. All upcoming programs are highlighted on the website. The collaboration with Kimberly Senior Citizens for the monthly Mid-Week Matinees has been successful and will continue in 2014. The Year of Reading Dangerously has been very successful – partner libraries hope to continue it into 2014 with a revamped theme of “The Year of Listening Dangerously.” The group will meet soon to work out the details. FOLKS will be hosting a library fundraiser called “Scrap for Books” on November 16th. Talsma and Trentlage reported on the success of the FOLKS booth at Kermis. Trentlage also reported that FOLKS will be sending out a fundraising letter before year end to make a plea for additional donations to the library. Carpenter shared an infographic called “The Internet Is Important to Everyone.” Carpenter will be meeting with Kent Swanson from the Little Chute School District in December or January regarding the Flex Academy which is taking shape in the Civic Wing. Swanson requested that the Academy be included on the January Library Board meeting agenda, so they can provide an update on progress. Carpenter expressed gratitude to Cheesefest for approving a $3000 grant for the purchase of children’s books for the Gerard H. Van Hoof Library in order to enhance collections related to early literacy and the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The 2013 WLA Conference begins October 22nd. Carpenter reported on programs included in the conference experience and is excited to see a year of hard work finally come to fruition. The library will be closed Wednesday, October 23rd, so that library staff can attend the conference for a day as this year’s in-service training. Library carpets will be cleaned while staff is away. YOUTH SERVICES REPORT Hardginski was unable to attend the meeting, so Carpenter presented the Youth Services report on her behalf. Family story time wrapped up a 7-week run with an average of 40 people attending weekly at the Little Chute Library and 35 in Kimberly. Hardginski has started using her personal iPad to share related videos and to highlight good early literacy apps for parents. A report on upcoming programming was provided. Preschool packs are now available for checkout. Each pack contains an early learning game plus three paperback picture books. The kits are designed to help preschoolers with learning letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and other concepts, as well as introduce them to a wide variety of picture books. Thanks to Lori Van Dyke for processing the kits and readying them for circulation. Hardginski expressed gratitude for the opportunity to attend the WLA Conference in Green Bay. She looks forward to an early literacy pre-conference with singer Jim Gill. WLA’s Youth Services Section produced a 2014 early literacy calendar for parents with daily tips on incorporating reading, science, math, writing, singing, and playing. Hardginski was asked to submit a month of ideas, so Kimberly-Little Chute Library is represented in the month of April on the calendar. A link to the calendar can be found on growingwisconsinreaders.org. Governor Walker’s office contacted Hardginski about the Read to Lead Board. She was asked to send an application and resume to apply to serve on the Board and hopes to hear back soon. The Board has a $400,000 budget dedicated to early literacy efforts in the state of Wisconsin. OLD BUSINESS There was nothing to report regarding the 2014 Library Budget, as it was approved as presented at the Joint Budget Hearing on October 15th. Carpenter provided an update on the Little Chute security gate replacement project. Fletcher left the meeting at 5:15 p.m. NEW BUSINESS Carpenter requested that Kelsey Christie be retained as a permanent substitute on the library staff. This would have no budgetary impact and would provide staff some flexibility with scheduling, as needed. Vander Velden moved, seconded by Vanderloop, to approve the request as presented. Motion carried. ITEMS FOR FUTURE AGENDAS There were no items offered for inclusion on future agendas. Talsma moved, seconded by Hietpas, to adjourn the meeting at 5:22 p.m. Motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Beth A. Carpenter, Recording Secretary
