OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM Deaka McClain, Chair Ciara Calsita, Member Alice Bruns, Vice Chair Connie Gutierrez, Member Sherry Diamond, Secretary Chris Karadjov, Member Nubia Flores Cedeno, Member Jamone Pili, Member CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair McClain at 1:04 pm. ROLL CALL Commissioners Ciara Calsita, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Connie Gutierrez, Chris Present: Karadjov, Alice Bruns and Deaka McClain Commissioners Jamone Pili and Sherry Diamond Absent: FLAG SALUTE The flag salute was led by Commissioner Gutierrez. PRESENTATION Faye Norman, Executive Director of the Empowerment Cubed Network (E3N), presented on the Special Needs Colloborative (SFNC). This collaborative is partnering with the Long Beach Publc Library to establish a service navigation model to reduce gaps in service and fragmentation for families with children with special needs, with a 3-year goal for full activation. OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM 1. 19-027CA Recommendation to approve minutes from the June 13, 2019 meeting of the Citizen's Advisory Commission on Disabilities. A motion was made by Commissioner Calsita, seconded by Chair McClain, to approve recommendation. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Ciara Calsita, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Connie Gutierrez, Chris Karadjov, Alice Bruns and Deaka McClain Absent: 2 - Jamone Pili and Sherry Diamond STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 2. 19-028CA Recommendation to receive and file monthly report by the Youth, Employment & Programs standing committee or adopt any recommendations this committee would like to make. Commissioner Calsita reported that the standing committee is working on an inclusion statement recommendation to make to both CACoD and ultimately, the mayor and city council for adoption. There was also a discussion on revisiting the resource book and make any necessary changes to it before the October DEAM event. A motion was made by Chair McClain, seconded by Commissioner Cedeno, to approve recommendation. OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM 3. 19-029CA Recommendation to receive and file monthly report by the Accessibility, Transportation & Services standing committee or adopt any recommendations this committee would like to make. Commissioner Karadjov reported that the committee was still discussing an accessibility townhall for a future CACoD event. There was also discussion about recommending some changes to how the parks & recreation catalogues are presented and future visits to parks. Lastly, the committee would like for CACoD to invite a representative from one of the cruise lines that services Long Beach to present on the accessibility of their cruise liners. One option would be to include this presentation during the accessibility townhall. A motion was made by Commissioner Calsita, seconded by Commissioner Cedeno, to approve recommendation. OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM 4. 19-030CA Recommendation to form ad-hoc committees for the October 2019 Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) and Mentoring Day events. Mentoring Day Ad-Hoc: Commissioner Calsita Commissioner Diamond Commissioner Gutierrez DEAM Ad-Hoc: Commisioner Bruns Commissioner Cedeno Commissioner Karadjov Commissioner McClain A motion was made by Commissioner Gutierrez, seconded by Vice Chair Bruns, to approve recommendation. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Ciara Calsita, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Connie Gutierrez, Chris Karadjov, Alice Bruns and Deaka McClain Absent: 2 - Jamone Pili and Sherry Diamond STAFF REPORT Heather Blackmun reminded the commission about the ADA anniversary proclamation being presented the following week, the grand opening of the new civic center on July 29th and the grand opening of the new main library on September 21. Ms. Blackmun also reminded the commission that starting in August, CACoD will start meeting in the new council chamber. ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioner Gutierrez spoke about her disappointment that the Disabled Resources Center only provided ASL interpreters for two hours, and not the entire event, during their annual dinner. After two hours, the individuals using the ASL service had to look to their family member for interpretation. Commissioner Gutierrez reminded the commission that the City in general is better than that, and should encourage our partners to be fully inclusive, especially if the City is going to support their efforts.
