CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 2019 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES 1150 EAST 4TH STREET, ROOM 202 LONG BEACH, CA 90802, 9AM, 9:00 AM Robert Finney, Chair Mary Alice Sedillo, Commissioner Winifred W. Carter, Commissioner William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Naida Tushnet, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Commissioner Yosh Yamanaka, Commissioner ROLL CALL At 9:03 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Winifred Carter, Don Darnauer, Mary Sedillo, William Smith, Present: Naida Tushnet, Michele Valencia and Robert Finney Commissioners Flora Easter and Yosh Yamanaka Absent: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Sedillo led the flag salute. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Valencia read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Recommendation to approve the minutes for the meeting held June 12, 2019. A motion was made by Commissioner Valencia, seconded by Commissioner Smith, to approve the the minutes for the meeting held June 12, 2019. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 7 - Winifred Carter, Don Darnauer, Mary Sedillo, William Smith, Naida Tushnet, Michele Valencia and Robert Finney Absent: 2 - Flora Easter and Yosh Yamanaka Page 1 of 3 CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 2019 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES 1150 EAST 4TH STREET, ROOM 202 LONG BEACH, CA 90802, 9AM, 9:00 AM 19-003SR GUEST SPEAKER Meggan Sorensen, Development Project Manager - Housing & Neighborhood Services Bureau gave a presentation on affordable housing. STAFF REPORT Ted Stevens, Recreation Superintendent reported that July is Recreation Month and Parks, Recreation & Marine have a lot going on and they gave a presentation at a recent City Council Meeting. He gave an update on a homeless incident reported by a local resident last month, PD and Homeless Servies were contacted and made them aware of situation. Ted Stevens announced he had a meeting with Expo people and they are in the process of transistioning over to adding an extra day to the program. He also recieved a proposal from CSULB Lifefit regarding fitness classes at the Community Centers. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith Commissioner Darnauer reported that the kitchen was upgraded at Chavez Park and Willmore City baking is going to start a free baking class for Seniors. B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Carter and Finney - NONE C. Health - Commissioners Sedillo, Tushnet, and Yamanaka Commissioner Sedillo reported the leading cause of blindness in Seniors is expected to double by 2050. She also reported that an older gentleman with schizophrenia was missing and "LA FOUND" was able to track him down with a trackable bracelet. D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Easter, and Carter Commissioner Sedillo reported the Long Beach Community Investment Companycelebrated the grand opening of a 5 unit affordable housing in the 3rd district. E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Yamanaka - NONE F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Easter, and Smith Commissioner Darnauer reported seniors are interested in Passport services. The Committee will start holding meetings to discuss. Commissioners reviewed and approved the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Brochure. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Patron expressed his concerns of the burden of construction on 4th & Orange and his difficulties getting to the Senior Center. NEXT MEETING The General meeting of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held August 14, 2019 at 9:00 am, at Long Beach Senior Center located at 1150 E. 4th Street - Room #202, Long Beach 90802. ADJOURNMENT At 9:54 a.m., Commissioner Finney adjourned the meeting. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to three minutes. The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments on non-agenda items.
