Garate, Member Kim Vuong, Member CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair McClain at 1:06 pm. ROLL CALL Commissioners Stephen Adams, Victor Garate, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Gretchen Present: Swanson, Kim Vuong and Deaka McClain Commissioners Connie Gutierrez and Chris Karadjov Absent: FLAG SALUTE The flag salute was led by Commissioner Cedeno. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PRESENTATION Long Beach City Clerk, Monique De La Garza, presented the changes being implemented in LA County to modernize and improve the voting experience. This project is called the Voting Solutions for All People (VASP) project. This CA-Agenda Item was approve recommendation. Yes: 6 - Stephen Adams, Victor Garate, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Gretchen Swanson, Kim Vuong and Deaka McClain Absent: 2 - Connie Gutierrez and Chris Karadjov STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 20-006CA Recommendation to receive and file monthly report by the Accessibility, Transportation & Services standing commitee or adopt any recommendations this committee would like to make. A motion was made by Commissioner Adams, seconded by Commissioner Cedeno, to approve recommendation. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Stephen Adams, Victor Garate, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Gretchen Swanson, Kim Vuong and Deaka McClain Absent: 2 - Connie Gutierrez and Chris Karadjov 20-007CA Recommendation to receive and file monthly report by the Youth, Employment & Programs standing committee or adopt any recommendaitons this committee would like to make. OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM DISABILITIES MINUTES NEW BUSINESS 20-008CA Recommendation to receive and file report regarding CACoD's participaton in the Festival of Human Abilities 2020 event hosted by the Aquarium of the Pacific. A motion was made by Commissioner Garate, seconded by Commissioner Swanson, to received and filed. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Stephen Adams, Victor Garate, Nubia Flores Cedeno, Gretchen Swanson, Kim Vuong and Deaka McClain Absent: 2 - Connie Gutierrez and Chris Karadjov DISCUSSION OF 2020 GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS cont. Discussion continued about ways to engage the public and better highlight both CACoD and the disability community and what tools and resources are available to commissoners to support those efforts . There was specific discussion about utilizing the media wall in the city hall lobby to highlight the 30th Anniversary of the Signing of the ADA in July 2020, as well as perhaps doing a presentation during Mayor Garcia's proclamation at City Council. OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM DISABILITIES MINUTES AGENCY REPORTS Commissioner Swanson, who leads the steering committee for the LA Falls Prevention Coalition, shared that the coalition is hosting an ADA workshop specific to bathrooms in Pasadena later in February. Commissioner Cedeno, who sits on the LBUSD Community Advisory Committee, reported that she recently moderated a candidtate's forum for LBUSD's school board vacancies. The election will be held on March 3. Commissioner Adams reported that The Children's Clinic will now be called The Children's Clinic Family Health, given that a high number of patients served are adults. Commissioner Adams also reported that the clinic hopes to open it's new facility soon in partnership with Mental Health America. Commissioner Vuong shared that Tichenor Clinic will be hosting a carnival on Saturday, June 6th from 11-3 and encouraged CACoD to host an information table. Commissioner McClain reported that she and Commissioner Vuong have been invited to speak to CSULB psychology students on February 20th regarding disability ettiquette and attitudes. Commissioner McClain also reported the she is working with Global Paratransit to do a series of disability sensitivity trainings for their drivers. Global Paratransit is the service provider for Access Services and LB Dial-A-Lift. Lastly, Commissioner McClain shared that every 2nd Friday of the month, the Disabled Resources Center holds their advocacy meetings from 2:00-4:00. Commissioner Garate shared that the drivers and administrative staff employed by Global Paratransit receive trainings consistently throughout the year, including sensitivity and driving. Commissioner Garate shared how impactful sensitivity training has been thus far. Commissioner Garate also reminded the commission of the Abilities Expo coming up at the LA Convention Center. Lastly, Commissioner Garate reported that Access Services will be providing free transportation to and from vote centers on March 3. OCEAN BOULEVARD, 1:00 PM DISABILITIES MINUTES STAFF REPORT Citywide Accessibility Coordinator, Heather Van Wijk, officially welcomed CACoD's two new commissioners Victor Garate and Gretchen Swanson and announced the resignation of Alice Bruns. Mrs. Van Wijk also shared/discussed: LB Unity Festival events Mayor Garcia's Aquarim Abilities Night will be held on Sunday, March 8th and invited CACoD to participate City of Long Beach ADA staff trainings have commenced No salary resolution update State Senator Lena Gonzalez recently announced her first bill - SB 961-the Equal Insurance HIV Act Census 2020 CACoD presentation next month There was also discussion about a future universally accessible playground and better promotion of our inclusiveness in our parks.
