GUEST PRESENTATION
Reggie Harrison, the City of Long Beach's Director of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency
Communications, shared an overview of disaster preparation; a review of equity practices within
the department; a review on 911 activation; and, a review of 911 technology used to assist
people with disabilities.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
1. 21-051CA Recommendation to approve minutes from the July 8, 2021 meeting of
the Citizen's Advisory Commission on Disabilities.

A motion was made by Secretary Swanson, seconded by
Commissioner Karadjov, to approve recommendation. The
motion carried by the following vote:

2. 21-052CA Recommendation to receive and file monthly report from the
Accessibility, Transportation & Services standing committee.

Commissioner Adams reported that this committee met on Friday, August 6th.
Items discussed included the transportation fair and the current
Covid-status/delta variant that could affect locations for this event (current
options are Cabrillo HS and The Scottish Rite Cathedral); accessibility
concerns at El Dorado Park specific to the archery range; a future presentation
from Parks, Recreation & Marine; scooters concerns; a future presentation
from the airport, including a possible field trip.
A motion was made by Commissioner Hill, seconded by
Secretary Swanson, to approve recommendation. The motion
carried by the following vote:

Gretchen Swanson and Victor Garate

3. 21-053CA Recommendation to receive and file monthly report from the Youth,
Employment & Programs standing committee.

Commissioner Swanson reported that this committee met on both July 8 and
July 22. The committee continues to work on equity in public spaces and have
met with four councilmembers and Mayor Garcia since the July 8 commission
meeting (meeting with a total of 6 councilmembers). These meetings have
been positive and productive. Commission Swanson also spoke on the Cities
For All Initiative, which was formally adopted by the City of Long Beach on
August 3, 2021.
A motion was made by Commissioner Vuong, seconded by
Commissioner Adams, to approve recommendation. The

A motion was made by Commissioner Hill, seconded by
Secretary Swanson, to approve recommendation. The motion

STAFF REPORT
Heather Van Wijk reported on the several successes the City achieved in July, including Cities
for All; beach mats feasibility study and the work being done around that including meeting with
vendors and working with the CA Coastal Commission; the demobilization of the mass vaccine
site at the Long Beach Convention Center; the ongoing redistricting meetings; the final
community budget meeting before the FY22 budget gets adopted; the adoption and availability
of the final Digital Inclusion Resource Guide; Housing Element Update wrapping up very soon.
AGENCY REPORTS
Commissioner Adams reported The Children's Clinic Family Health Center continues vaccine
efforts with ongoing clinics at various locations throughout each week.
Commissioner Hill reported on Astro Access' current efforts around space flight for people with
disabilities. For more information please go to www.astroaccess.org.
Commissioner Karadjov reported that CSULB will be starting classes soon at 50% in person.
Commissioner Vuong reported that Tichenor Clinic is having a backpack give-away event on
8/14.
