CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 2019 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES 1150 EAST 4TH STREET, ROOM 202 LONG BEACH, CA 90802, 9:00 AM Robert Finney, Chair Mary Alice Sedillo, Commissioner Winifred W. Carter, Commissioner William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Naida Tushnet, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner Yosh Yamanaka, Commissioner ROLL CALL At 9:03 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Winifred Carter, Don Darnauer, Mary Sedillo, William Smith, Present: Naida Tushnet and Robert Finney Commissioners Flora Easter and Yosh Yamanaka Absent: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Carter led the flag salute. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Sedillo read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Recommendation to approve the minutes for the meeting held March 13, 2019. A motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by Commissioner Tushnet, to approve the recommendation. Martinez, PhD Professor & Archstone Foundation Endowed Chair, Gerontology, Director, Center for Successful Aging. California State University of Long Beach gave a presentation on the aging population and discussed the services and programs the Center for successful aging has to offer. STAFF REPORT Ted Stevens, Recreation Superintendent informed the commissioners that the City Council Budget Oversight Committee approved the City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine plan for spending the $100,000 FY19 Budget enhancement for senior programs. They will consider making this a structural enhancement in the FY20 budget process. Ted Stevens, Recreation Superintendent also passed out a Senior Water Exercise flyer to the commissioners. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - None B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Carter and Finney - None C. Health - Commissioners Sedillo, Tushnet, and Yamanaka - Commissioner Sedillo reported that Eli Lilly, was authorized to sell a "generic" Insulin for half the cost. D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Easter, and Carter Commissioner Carter reported on a direct email from Mayor Robert Garcia stating they would be building Affordable Housing in Long Beach. Commissioner Sedillo also reported on project "Aster" where they will be developing 218 new apartments. She also reported on rent control. E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Yamanaka Commissioner Tushnet reported that the Long Beach City Council enacted a policy of relocation assistance for renters. F. Technology - Commissioner Finney Commissioner Finney presented a May 19th article to the commissioners from Consumer Reports regarding Robocalls. He supplied forms incase anyone was interested in filling out and mailing in. G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Easter, and Smith Commissioner Darnauer reported on March 26 the Long Beach Transit conducted a public forum on the Passport Bus expansion. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Two members of the public addressed the commission: Melissa Botten, Certified Houstic Nutrionist and Yoga Instructor. Karen Reside, Long Beach Gray Panther representative. NEXT MEETING The General meeting of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held May 8, 2019 at 9:00 am, at Long Beach Senior Center located at 1150 E. 4th Street - Room #202, Long Beach 90802.
