At 9:04 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order.

Commissioner Smith led the flag salute.
WELCOME
Commissioner Finney introduced and welcomed our new commissioner, Michele Valencia to the
Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission.
READING OF MISSION STATEMENT
Commissioner Sedillo read the mission statement.
Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in
Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation,
technology and the quality of life.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Recommendation to approve minutes for the meeting held April 10, 2019.
A motion was made Commissioner Naida Tushnet, seconded by
Commissioner Flora Easter, to approve the recommendation.
The minutes were approved and passed by the following vote:
Yes: 8 - Winifred Carter, Flora Easter, Mary Sedillo, William Smith,
Naida Tushnet, Michele Valencia, Yosh Yamanaka and
Robert Finney
Absent: 1 - Don Darnauer
GUEST SPEAKER
Patti Larson, Executive Director of Food Finders discussed how the program works, how they
rescue food and distribute out to people of all ages.
STAFF REPORT
Ted Stevens, Recreation Superintendent informed the commissioners that the Long Beach Senior
Citizen Advisory Commission brochure is in graphics and will try to have at next meeting so they
can approve. He also stated Bureau Manager, Gladys Kaiser and the Recreation team is working
with the 8th District to move forward with the transition.

Commissioner Sedillo reported how the county is pushing to cut prescription drug costs.
D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Easter, and Carter
Commissioner Sedillo reported on Housing Crisis & LA County approved $63.4 Mil for affordable
housing.
E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Yamanaka - NONE
F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE
G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Easter, and Smith - None

Karen Reside, Long Beach Gray Panther representative addressed the commission.
NEXT MEETING
The General meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held June 12,
2019 at 9 am, at Ernest Mc Bride Park Teen Center located at 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue,
Long Beach 90813.
ADJOURNMENT
At 9:43 a.m., Commissioner Finney adjourned the meeting.

Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the
Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to
three minutes. The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments
on non-agenda items.
