At 9:04 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order.

Commissioner Yamanaka led the flag salute.
READING OF MISSION STATEMENT
Commissioner Easter read the mission statement.
Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and
broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of
life.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Recommendation to approve the minutes for the meeting held July 10, 2019.
GUEST SPEAKER
Jose Callejas, 211 Outreach Coordinator discussed the assistance 211 has to offer and provide.

STAFF REPORT
Ted Stevens, Recreation Superintendent reported that summer is winding down and that over 2000 youth
& teens attended All City Beach Day. He also discussed the Budget meeting that took place on August
31, 2019 and the changes.

A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - NONE
B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Carter and Finney
Commissioner Carter reported that nearly 20 mass killings were recorded in the US.
C. Health - Commissioners Sedillo, Tushnet, and Carter- NONE
Commissioner Sedillo reported on Medicare benefits.
D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Easter, and Carter
Commissioner Carter reported on how housing is divided into seven parts, and the details.
E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Yamanaka
Commissioner Valencia reported on a Presentation/Fundraiser for Retired Amercans.
F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE
G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Easter, and Smith - NONE
NEW BUSINESS
Commissioner Yosh Yamanaka resigned from the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory
Commission.
Sheila with Willmore Baking Company brought in baked goods and presented information on her
baking classes and submitted a proposal to teach senior cooking classes at Chavez Park.
Commissioner Finney made a motion for Parks & Recreation to considered spending $2400/year
towards Willmore Baking classes for Seniors. Commissioner Darnauer moved the vote, and
Commissioner Tushnet second the motion with zero opposed votes.
