At 9:02 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order.

Commissioner Finney led the flag salute.
READING OF MISSION STATEMENT
Commissioner Easter read the mission statement.
Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults
in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health,
transportation, technology and the quality of life.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Recommendation to approve the minutes for the meeting held August 14, 2019.

GUEST SPEAKER
Jeff Protzman from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSULB distributed a copy of The
Sun, Fall session, and explained the different classes they have to offer.
STAFF REPORT
Ted Stevens, Recreation Superintendent had a lot to report this month:
City Budget passed, $15,000 was added to the remaining FY19 one time funds that are rolling
over to FY20.
Senior brochures were distributed in Community Centers and translated brochures will be out
soon.
Finalizing partnership with Olli.
LifeFit Program should be starting soon, the equipment was just purchased.
Willmore Baking was approved and will be starting classes at Chavez Park.
Health & Wellness Fair and Flu Shot Clinic will be held October 10th at the LB Senior Center.
Distributed a Mercy Housing flyer to the commissioners regarding a new Senior Housing
Development.
Aging Expo will be held, October 5, 2019 at the Grand.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - Chair Darnauer
Commissioner Darnauer proposed and consent was passed unanimously by the Commission
for authority by the Committee Chair to issue a periodic Senior Advisory notice of Social Events.
The Social Events notice will be distributed to each Commissioner, Community Center, Park,
Senior Center, Library, and to the Councilmembers offices.
B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Carter and Valencia - Chair Carter - NONE
C. Health - Commissioners Sedillo, Valencia and Easter - Chair Valencia - NONE
D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Tushnet, and Carter - Chair Sedillo
Commissioner Carter reported on an email from Mayor Garcia regarding the Homeless count.
E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia - Chair Tushnet
Commissioner Valencia reported on the Older Americans Act and to designate the LGBTQ
Older Adult population and its needs.
Commissioner Tushnet reported on the AB1482 and the SB5 Laws.
F. Technology - Commissioner Finney, Chair Finney - NONE
G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Smith, and Easter - Chair Smith - NONE

Gray Panther representative, Ms. Reside reported on events happening in Long Beach.
Patron, Mr. Castle reported on transportation issues related to LB Transit.
NEXT MEETING
The General meeting of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held October 16, 2019.
The meeting will be held at El Dorado Park 2800 Studebaker Rd. Long Beach , CA 90815 at 9
am.

At 10:18 a.m., Commissioner Finney adjourned the meeting.

Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the
Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to
three minutes. The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments
on non-agenda items.
