CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2019 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES 1150 EAST 4TH STREET, ROOM 202 LONG BEACH, CA 90802, 9:00 AM Robert Finney, Chair Mary Alice Sedillo, Commissioner Winifred W. Carter, Commissioner William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Naida Tushnet, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Commissioner ROLL CALL At 9:02 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Winifred Carter, Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Mary Sedillo, Present: William Smith, Naida Tushnet, Michele Valencia and Robert Finney PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Smith led the flag salute. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Valencia read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Recommendation to approve the minutes for the meeting held October 16, 2019. October 16, 2019 Minutes were approved. GUEST SPEAKER Lisa Mayberry, US Postal Service talked about mail fraud, computer hackers and other scams. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - Chair Darnauer Commissioner Darnauer that hisself and commissioners Smith, Finney & Sedillo attended the LB Transit Summit. B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Carter and Valencia - Chair Carter - NONE C. Health - Commissioners Sedillo, Valencia and Easter - Chair Valencia Commissioner Valencia reported on Preparing for disasters for people with disabilities and distributed FEMA pamphlets. D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Tushnet, and Carter - Chair Sedillo Commissioner Sedillo reported on potential housing developments and an article on Elder Care homes. E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia - Chair Tushnet - NONE F. Technology - Commissioner and Chair Finney - NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Smith, and Easter - Chair Smith Commissioner Smith reported that the Age Friendly Steering Committee has been tasked with a transportation program so Seniors will have greater transportation and mobility. NEW BUSINESS 1) 2020 Commission Meeting Dates - 2020 LBSCAC dates were submitted to commissioners and with an unanimous vote, dates were accepted. Dates will be submitted for publication on Senior Advisory site. 2) 2020 Election of Commission Chair and Vice Chair - Commissioner Finney will remain the Chair and Commissioner Tushnet will remain Vice Chair for the year of 2020. They will fulfill their duties for one more term. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Gray Panther representative, Karen Reside reported on several events and passed out invitations to their Holiday Potluck, December 7, 2019 from 10:30a-2p at the Long Beach Senior Center in room #202. Commissioner Finney invited everone to attend "The Dream Chest", a play by Scarlett Finney. PRM Supervisor, Terri Eggers passed out a flyer with different locations, that would be serving hot Holiday Dinners/Lunches.
