WELCOME Ted Stevens introduced the new Commissioner, Phyllis Schmidt. ROLL CALL Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, Present: William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Don Darnauer led the Pledge of Allegiance. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Smith read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Diana Lara, Executive Director of Food Finders gave a presentation on their operation and that they have been in business for over 30 years and are still trying to eliminate hunger and food waste while improving nutrition for people in the community. Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by Commissioner Valencia, to approve the February 10, 2021 minutes. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 7 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet STAFF REPORT Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens reported on the Aging consortium and asked commissioners if they would be interested in joining. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - NONE B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioner Valencia - NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter NONE D. Housing - Commissioner Tushnet - Commissioner Tushnet reported that City Council passed Inclusionary Housing. She also spoke about rent assistance. E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia - NONE F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Smith, and Easter - Commissioner Smith reported bus riders are mandated to wear masks.
