A workshop meeting of the City of Maaeira Beacn Boara of Commissioners was helct at 2:00 p.m. on
November 7, 2017 in the Patricia Shontz Commission Chambers at City Hall, located at 300 Municipal
Drive, Madeira Beach, Florida. to interview Attorney Ralf Brookes for the appointed position of City Attorney.
Mayor Black called the meeting to order.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Maggi Black, Mayor
John Oouthirt, Vice-Mayor, Commissioner District 4
Terry Lister, Commissioner District 1
Nancy Hodges, Commissioner District 2
Nancy Oakley, Commissioner District 3
CITY STAFF PRESENT: Andrea Gamble, Interim City Clerk
Walter Pierce, Finance Director
Dave Marsicano, Public Works/Marina Director
A. CALL TO ORDER
Mayor Black called the meeting to order at approximately 2:00 p.m.
B. ROLL CALL
The City Clerk called the roll and all Commissioners were present.
C. PUBLIC COMMENT
Members of the public that questioned Attorney Ralf Brookes were residents Robert Preston and John
Hendricks.
D. INTERVIEW FOR CITY ATTORNEY
Attorney Ralf Brookes gave his background as an attorney and answered questions from the
Commissioners which included the following:
• Tell us a little about yourself and your firm and why you are interested in becoming the next City
Attorney for the City of Madeira Beach.
• Responsive, thorough legal advice is an important aspect of good City Attorney services.
Specifically, the availability to communicate and respond to issues via phone, email, and
occasionally in person will be expected in a timely manner. Tell us how you plan on being
responsive and thorough in meeting the legal needs of our community.
• Tell us about a conflict you experienced in which either an elected official or appointed staff member
disagreed with some legal advice you were providing. How did you navigate/negotiate the
situation?
• What motivates you and what made you decide to be a City Attorney?
• What challenges are you looking for in this position and why should we hire you?

Following discussion, the Commission gave consensus to place the City Attorney position on the next
regular BOC meeting held on November 14, 2017.

The Mayor adjourned the meeting at 3:20 p.m.
