Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan January 18, 2023 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 6:00 PM at Department of Public Service, 801 Ajax Drive Madison Heights, MI 48071 CALL TO ORDER Chair Szymanski called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Chair Paige Szymanski Rebecca Chambliss Nickole Fox Emily Reetz Council Representative Emily Rohrbach Also present, Heather Hames, HREC staff liaison ABSENT Amy Pugh Marie Urban Council Alternate Quinn Wright ADDITIONS/DELETIONS APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of December 27, 2022. Approval of the minutes of December 27, 2022. Motion made by Council Representative Rohrbach, Seconded by Reetz. Voting Yea: Chair Szymanski, Chambliss, Fox, Reetz, Council Representative Rohrbach 2. 2023 Work Plan The HREC Work Plan was accepted by City Council at the January 9, 2023 meeting. HREC discussion of the 2023 Work Plan included discussion of the Diverse Voices Book Club's reach beyond just patrons attending the book club discussion. H. Hames shared that the 6 books selected for the book club had 365 total engagements with patrons in a variety of formats. For 2023, each book title will include a bookmark with instructions and questions on other ways the patrons can participate in the book discussion. 1 01-24-22 HREC also discussed moving away from previously established committees/reports in favor of a roundtable format to keep the group updated on each of the work plan items at future meetings. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC None present wishing to speak. REPORTS 3. Advise & Educate No update. 4. Communications E. Rohrbach will give City Council a report on the HREC 2022 accomplishments at the council meeting on January 23, 2023. 5. Fundraising Current balance in the HREC escrow account is $883.61. Cookbook - E. Reetz volunteered to research companies and costs for the cookbook project. The goal deadline is to have the cookbook ready for sale by the date of the 2023 city tree lighting. 6. Diverse Voices Book Talks 2023 H. Hames shared the Diverse Voices Book Talks list of titles and book talk dates for 2023. HREC also discussed partnering with the Library to bring a Monthly inclusive Story Time with guest readers to begin in February with author Gayle Bowman reading her book "Mommy, Tell Me About African American Inventors" in the library at The Reserve at Red Run in February 2023. Motion made by Council Representative Rohrbach, Seconded by Chambliss. Voting Yea: Chair Szymanski, Chambliss, Fox, Reetz, Council Representative Rohrbach UNFINISHED BUSINESS HREC will designate two members to communicate with Madison Heights Citizens United on the Juneteenth event. HREC will discuss options for participating in the Juneteenth event in a meaningful way. HREC will designate members as needed to the ADA Pride Month Art Project. NEW BUSINESS ADA Pride Month Art Project 2 01-24-22 E. Rohrbach shared information from Michiagn SILC organization who has chosen Madison Heights as one of four locations in the State for ADA Pride Month Art Projects and motioned for the HREC to co-sponsor this event with the Madison Heights Arts Board for the duration of the 2023 planned year. Motion made by Reetz, Seconded by Council Representative Rohrbach.
