Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan February 08, 2023 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Wednesday, February 08, 2023 at 6:00 PM at DPS Recreation Building Break Room 801 Ajax Madison Heights, MI 48071 CALL TO ORDER Meeting called to order at 6:03 pm by chairperson Szymanski. Minutes of January 18, 2023 Motion made by Council Representative Rohrbach, Seconded by Reetz. Voting Yea: Chair Szymanski, Chambliss, Reetz, Council Representative Rohrbach MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Kevin Wright from Madison Heights Citizens United attended to talk about HREC co-hosting an event on Four Point Racial Recognition in April or May. Motion made by Council Representative Rohrbach, Seconded by Reetz. Voting Yea: Chair Szymanski, Chambliss, Reetz, Council Representative Rohrbach 1 01-24-22 K. Wright also discussed planning a Juneteenth flag raising on Friday June 16, 2023 with a time to be determined. CITY COUNCIL UPDATE Councilperson Rohrbach shared that she will be presenting a recap of HREC activities from 2022 at the next City Council meeting on February 27, 2023. This same meeting will also include board appointments so share the word with anyone who is interested to apply for open positions. Councilman Wright also encouraged people to apply for open boards and also to consider the newly created Charter Review Commission. ROUND TABLE Neighborhood Story Time - story times outside the library in the neighborhood focused on stories of inclusion. First story time will take place on February 22, 2023 at 10:30 am at the Reserve at Red Run in the library and will take place on the last Wednesday of each month. H. Hames will create a sign up genius to find guest readers and will send the invite to city council to offer the guest reader spots, then reach out to other community members and public. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 2. Juneteenth Juneteenth - HREC would like to participate in a meaningful way and are looking to hear about plans from MHCU on this year's plans so the HREC can participate. MHCU is still in planning stages so discussions will continue. NEW BUSINESS ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 7:07 pm. The next HREC meeting will be on March 8, 2023 at 6 pm.
