Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan May 15, 2023 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 6:00 PM at Library - Event Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. Madison Heights, MI 48071 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 6:01 pm by chairperson Szymanski. ROLL CALL PRESENT Chair Paige Szymanski Emily Reetz Syed Murtaza Council Representative Emily Rohrbach Council Alternate Quinn Wright EXCUSED ABSENT Rebecca Chambliss Nickole Fox ALSO PRESENT Staff Liaison Heather Hames ADDITIONS/DELETIONS None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes for March 29, 2023 Motion to approve minutes of March 29, 2023 as presented, made by Councilor Rohrbach. Seconded by E. Reetz. All ayes. Motion carries. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC No one present wishing to speak. COUNCIL UPDATE City Council is interested in having more updates from HREC and encouraging more residents to get involved. HREC discussed having HREC representatives attend council meetings when possible in order to increase communication. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 2. Juneteenth Crafts 1 5-15-2023 Two crafts were selected for the Juneteenth event including wind socks and a folded paper craft both focusing on the symbols on the Juneteenth flag. Heather Hames will send out a sign-up form for shifts at the Juneteenth table. NEW BUSINESS 3. Cookbook Vendor Selection HREC members considered the following vendors for the cookbook project: Create My Cookbook, Heritage Cook Book, and Simply Cookbooks. Councilor E. Rohrbach made the motion to select Heritage Cook Book for the HREC cookbook. Seconded by E. Reetz. All ayes, motion passes. ROUNDTABLE Council Alternate Q. Wright shared potential dates for presentation and bus tour as July 5 and 19 with a tour on July 30. The HREC group asked Q. Wright to reach out for a new date to replace July 5 as it might not be a good week for a program right after Independence Day. Arts and Pride is planned for Sunday June 4 from 2 pm - 6 pm. A caricature artist, face painter, and tie dye project are planned. Working on food. Q. Wright may be able to grill hot dogs for a part of the day.
