Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan February 15, 2024 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Library - Breckenridge Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair Szymanski at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Chair Paige Szymanski Council Representative Quinn Wright Nickole Fox Syed Murtaza-Rose Alec Yu Jessica Showers Also present, staff liaison Heather Hames Motion made by Murtaza-Rose to excuse Aaron Brown, Seconded by Yu. Passed unanimously. ABSENT Rebecca Chambliss Council Representative Alternate Emily Rohrbach Student delegate Colton Chambliss APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of January 18, 2024 Motion to approve the minutes of January 18, 2024 by Fox, Seconded by Murtaza-Rose. Passed unanimously. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC No one present wishing to speak. MOTORAMA AND SMOKE Motion by Yu to set a target date for Motorama and Smoke of September 14, 2024, Seconded by Murtaza-Rose. Passed unanimously. COOKBOOK 1 Motion by Yu to accept the letter written by Murtaza-Rose that serves as an introduction letter to the Human Relations and Equity Commission for commission members to distribute to potential community partners or local businesses that describes what the Human Relations and Equity Commission is, announces the community cookbook project, and shares information on how the community could get involved, if interested. Seconded by Showers. Passed Unanimously. BOOK CLUB Through public voting, the following titles were selected for the time period of April through September 2024. April 9, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. May 14, Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum. June 11, A Fire So Wild by Sarah Ruiz-Grossman. July 9, Hula by Jasmin 'Iolani Hakes. August 13, The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. September 10, Rebecca, Not Becky by Christine Platt and Catherine Wigginton Greene. NEW BUSINESS 2. Zoning Motion by Murtaza-Rose to table until March meeting, Seconded by Yu. Pass unanimously. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m. by Chair Szymanski.
