A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at
6:30 PM at Library - Breckenridge Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd.
CALL TO ORDER
Vice Chair Brown called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. Minutes of March 20, 2025
Motion by Brown to approve the minutes of March 20, 2025. Seconded by Kapas.
Motion passed unanimously.
MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Kevin Wright from Madison Heights Citizens United invited HREC to have a non-profit table at
the Juneteenth event, as non-profit tables are now by invite only.
Wright also inquired about the Juneteenth Scholarship previously mentioned at HREC meetings.
Wright also invited HREC members to the Juneteenth flag raising on Friday June 13, 2025 at 8
am at City Hall.

Arts and Pride, Sunday June 22, 2025.
Motion by Brown to create a subcommittee for the Juneteenth table to consist of Kapas,
Strunk, and Brown. Seconded by Kapas. Motion passed unanimously.
FOOD INSECURITY
No update at this time.
POLICY SUBCOMMITTEE
Library Safe Child policy will be reviewed and recommendation made at subcommittee meeting.
REVIN IN THE HEIGHTS
3. LEGO Group
A representative from the Michigan LEGO Users Group discussed the possibility of the
group attending Revin in the Heights. HREC asked for a proposal.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
5. Accessibility Study
Showers shared feedback from The Arc Accessibility study. Between 60-70 people
responded, with 3 from Madison Heights. Generally, participants responded that the
Oakland County cities they visit have average rating for accessible services but the most
often mentioned areas of interest were in Transportation and Recreation. Troy and
Rochester Hills were highest rated.
Motion made by Showers to create an Accessibility Survey based specific to Madison
Heights based on the Oakland County Arc model. Seconded by Brown. Motion passed
unanimously.
6. Disability Programs

Motion made by Brown to create a subcommittee made up of Showers, Strunk, and
Hames to plan an adaptive game night social program to take place in July at the
Library. Seconded by Showers. Motion passed unanimously.
