Sustainable Madison Minutes of meeting December 6, 2016 Meeting called to order at 7:35 by Stephan Stocker. Present were Amy Terracciano and Gene Cracovia. Discussion 1. How to avoid another year like 2016 where so many actions required recertification. Mr. Stocker divided up the actions were between the members (see attachment) with the thought that relationships be build throughout the Borough so each SM member could work with others in town to be updated as to the goings on of various actions actually performed by their department or group. This is based on the fact that many of the Boroughs 455 points/40+ actions are performed by Government Departments or Borough Groups such as the Rotary – paper shredding day, DPW – recycling depot, etc.. Many of the actions assigned to the members were those actions updated by them this past year. Unfortunately, there are a lot of actions to be split up between so few of us and to further complicate matters all actions come with varying due dates ranging from yearly to ten years. Mr. Stocker proposed we start a program of timely updating, either when the action is acted on or with yearend reporting. Sustainable Jersey’s letter dated October 20, 2016 proposes this tactic. The letter congratulates the Borough for recertifying as “Silver” and that the Borough certification will expire December 31, 2019. Discussion 2. Meeting dates for 2017, there were no changes requested for the dates but there was a request for a 7pm start time. Discussion 3. Sustainable Jersey Small Grants and Green Projects. As a project Gene Cracovia along with The Friends of Shade Tree Board wish to build an arboretum at Summer Hill Park showcasing all New Jersey trees i.e. Red Oak, White Oak, Black Oak, Pin Oak etc.. He wishes to apply for a small grant to help fund aerial photograph of Madison’s tree canopy and open space to aid in calculation of the percentage of canopy to open space. Amy Terraccino wants to do social media outreach but is still working out the details. Mr. Stocker offered to put her in touch with Ellen Kranefuss and Mary Ellen Kapalo who both work on social media for the Madison Environmental Commission and Sustainable Madison.
