Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee

Sustainable  Madison   Minutes  June  18,  2019     Chairperson,  Kathleen  Caccavale,  called  the  meeting  to  order  at  1:02  pm.   STATEMENT  IN  COMPLIANCE  WITH  THE  OPEN  PUBLIC  MEETINGS  ACT:     “In  compliance  with  the  Open  Public  Meetings  Act,  adequate  notice  of  this  meeting  of  the   Sustainable  Madison  Advisory  Committee  Meeting  was  provided  by  transmitting  a  copy  of  the   meeting  notice  to  the  Madison  Eagle  and  Morris  County  Daily  Record,  posting  a  copy  on  the   bulletin  board  at  the  main  entrance  of  the  Hartley  Dodge  Memorial,  and  filing  a  copy  in  the   office  of  the  Clerk.  This  notice  was  made  available  to  members  of  the  general  public.”     The  following  acknowledged  their  presence:   Kathleen  Caccavale,  Chairperson   Peter  Fried,  Resident/Regular  Member   Joan  Maccari,  MEC  Representative/Regular  Member   Lisa  Jordan,  Resident/Regular  Member     Marilyn  Musielski,  Resident/Regular  Member     Gene  Cracovia,  Resident/Regular  Member   Angelique  Devost,  Prospective  Member     May  14  minutes  were  unanimously  approved.       Reports  from  members  who  attended  the  Sustainability  Summit  on     •   Peter  Fried  –  NJDEP  grants  from  VW  funds,  recycling  feedback  at  curbside  bins,  food   waste  used  in  anaerobic  digester  for  water  treatment,  food  waste  to  energy  questions   for  Emily  DeMaio  of  DEP     •   Lisa  Jordan  –  online  registry  to  recognize  green  businesses,  Sustainable  Jersey  money   available  for  student  interns     •   Kathi  Caccavale  –  mayors’  perspective,  Princeton  organic  waste  program,  get  people   from  green  team  onto  town  council,  equity/diversity,  aligning  actions  with  one  another,   GRIPS  retrofits  police  cars  with  battery  system  that  reduces  idling,  currently  no  Morris   county  SJ  Hub         Review  of  actions  and     •   we  can  introduce  additional  items  at  any  time   •   follow  up  on  green  cleaning,  composting  digesters,  diversity  and  equity     •   Energy  efficiency  still  needs  work     •   Madison  is  considering  an  alternate-­‐fuel  vehicle  in  its  fleet   •   For  anti-­‐idling  compliance,  education  may  be  more  effective  than  enforcement,  replace   faded  signs     •   Can  we  get  an  ordinance  against  noisy  and/or  polluting  lawn  mowers?     •   Maplewood  has  an  ordinance  against  gas  powered  leaf  blowers  at  certain  times  of  year      •   Interns  are  working  with  Peter  Fried  to  assess  Madison  carbon  footprint,  tricky  to  do  it   accurately   •   Could  Sustainable  Madison  send  a  report  to  the  council  each  year  that  states  how  much   we  reduced  our  carbon  footprint?   •   Include  the  Open  Space  Plan  and  senior  services  on  the  Asset  Map  of  Madison     •   On  Rosenet,  R207-­‐2013  Community  Vision  of  a  Green  Madison  may  need  to  be  updated,   along  with  other  copy   •   Materials  reuse  may  need  to  be  updated.     Research  on  Gold  Star  Items  were  assigned:   •   Water  –  Joan     •   Health  –  Lisa  or  Kathi     •   Energy  –  Peter     •   Waste  –  Angelique       Sustainable  Jersey  holds  an  Awards  Luncheon  in  November     In  off-­‐cycle  years,  we  only  need  to  meet  6  times;  in  on-­‐cycle  years,  12  times.     Next  meeting  will  be  July  16,  2019  at  1:00  pm.       There  being  no  further  business,  the  meeting  was  adjourned  at  2:36  pm.       Minutes  respectfully  submitted  by  Joan  Maccari.
