WORKSESSION NOTES
June 7, 2018
Due to a lack of a quorum a Meeting of the Manistee City Historic District Commission was not held on
Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 3:00 pm in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 70 Maple Street, Manistee, Michigan.
Applicants were in attendance and prepared to present their requests therefore a Work Session of the Manistee
City Historic District Commission was held beginning at 3:20 pm. No action can be taken at a worksession; the
applicants will present their requests to the commission at the next meeting.
Members Present: Aaron Bennett, John Perschbacher, Mary Russell
Members Absent: Dick Albee, Lee Trucks (excused), Vacancy (2)
Others: Mark Fedder (Museum Director) Steve Harold (Museum Curator), Denise Blakeslee
(Planning & Zoning Director) Tyler Leppanen (DDA Director), Lora Laurain (Recording
Secretary), Xavier Verna (Ramsdell Theatre), Tom Amor (Amor Signs), Andrew (Optech),
and Ed Bradford (City Finance Director)
Mr. Verna gave overview of the Ramsdell Theatre’s request for Certificate of Appropriateness for an LED Digital
Display sign.
Mr. Amor of Amor Signs described the sign as being fully programmable. The sign is able to meet zoning
requirements for being static for at least 15 minutes.
A representative of Optech described the sign as being energy efficient and smaller in size than previously used
posters and banners.
Mr. Harold stated that the Ramsdell Theatre is one of 7 pivotal buildings located in the Historic District and the
proposed modern technology is not compatible with the 1903 building.
Ms. Blakeslee stated that the Ramsdell Theatre has a zero lot line and does not allow room for a ground
mounted sign.
Mr. Bradford stated that the new sign would be a cost effective way to increase marketing and revenue.
At 3:45 pm Commissioners went outdoors to view the sign display which was presented by Amor Signs and
Optech. Commissioners reconvened in Council Chambers at 4:05 pm.
Commissioner Bennett discussed brick samples for the 100 Washington Street request for Certificate of
Appropriateness for façade improvements, noting that the materials are quite different than existing brick.
Ms. Blakeslee will contact Commissioners regarding rescheduling the Manistee City Historic District Commission.
The next meeting of the Historic District Commission will be on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 3:00 pm in the Council
Chambers, City Hall, 70 Maple Street.
