CITY OF MANISTEE PARKS COMMISSION MINUTES Thursday, June 21, 2018 Members Present: Lani Rozga, Stephen Spencer, Mark Tomaszewski, Tom Swedenborg Members Excused: Frank Cardella, Erin Pontiac Also Present: Kathie Boyle, Mickey McCann, Greg Steffeld, Kenn Kott A regular meeting of the Manistee Parks Commission was held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at City Hall 2nd floor conference room. Meeting was called to order by Vice-Chair Stephen Spencer at 5:30 p.m. Approval of Agenda Motion by Swedenborg, second by Spencer to approve agenda. All in favor. Citizen/Public Comment Greg Steffeld & Kenn Kott requested an update on the pickle ball/tennis courts. They are recommending the city improve the courts, possibly in conjunction with Manistee Area Public schools co-paying for the refurbishing of Sands Park Courts. Pickle ball courts not marked at Amory Youth parking lot. McCann stated he needs specifics on outlining courts and information on the mechanisms on the netting. Mr. Kott indicated that Manistee Township has agreed to provide six new pickle ball courts. If something is not done soon to the tennis courts it will be too late for repair. Commission invited both Mr. Steffeld and Mr. Kott to attend our July meeting for further discussion. Approval of Minutes Motion by Rozga, second by Spencer to approve April 19 and May 17, 2018 minutes. All in favor. Correspondence Boyle informed the commission of a letter dated May 21, 2018 sent from the City Manager to Mr. David LaPoint regarding his positon on the Parks Commission. As of today’s date no word was received from Mr. LaPoint regarding his interest on his intent to remain on the commission. City Clerk Heather Pefley has been instructed to advertise for the open position. Old Business Park Rules Motion by Swendenborg, second by Rozga to order 500 copies of the park rules and regulations from Jackpine. Pamphlets to be placed at each concession stand, Marina, City Hall, Vistitors Bureau and any locations that member’s request. All in favor. New Business None Discussion McCann updated the commission on the following: Parks Department has not been beach cleaning Fifth Avenue Beach due to the existence of piping plovers, it will however be cleaned for the 4th of July holiday. Due to vandalism at city restrooms they are being locked at night by the police department and opened in the morning by the parks department. Motion by Swendenborg, second by Spencer to adjourn at 6:10 p.m. Next meeting date – Thursday, July 19, 2018 @ 5:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kathie Boyle Recording Secretary
