CITY OF MANISTEE PARKS COMMISSION MINUTES Thursday, November 15, 2018 Members Present: Stephen Spencer, Erin Pontiac, Mark Tomaszewski, Kipp Pomranky, Tom Swedenborg Members Excused: Lani Rozga Members Unexcused : Frank Cardella: Also Present: Mickey McCann, Kathie Boyle A regular meeting of the Manistee Parks Commission was held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at City Hall 2nd floor conference room. Meeting was called to order by Chair Erin Pontiac at 5:35 p.m. Approval of Agenda Motion by Swedenborg, second by Spencer to approve agenda. All in favor. Citizen/Public Comment None Approval of Minutes Motion by Pomranky, second by Spencer to approve September 20, 2018 minutes. All in favor. October’s meeting was our annual parks tour. Correspondence None Committee Reports None Old Business New Rocket/Rotary Park Revisited previously discussed barrier at the new rotary park to prevent children from running onto the Street. Instead of driftwood as earlier discussed possibly planting some type of hedges would be very beneficial. Motion by Spencer, second by Tomaszewski to recommend Jeff Mikula to send recommendation to City Council to allow planting of approximately 25 – 30 plants/hedges on First Street for approximately 100’ property located from the playground going west to Lakeshore Motel this would restrain children from entering First Street. (This item does not require council approval). All in favor. McCann to measure exact length and report to Mikula. Beach Safety No update on AED’s for the beaches. Still checking on liability to the City if we were to have AED’s and Epipens at both beaches. Jeff Mikula to check with City Attorney. Capital Improvement List (and priorities) The budgeting process for the 2019 – 2020 fiscal year will begin in February 2019. Members to bring their ideas or suggestions for park improvements to next meeting on January 17, 2019. Boyle to bring to next meeting any information on file regarding Morton Park. Broom Ball/ 3 on 3 or 5 on 5 Tournament Commission members Spencer and Pomranky appointed to committee to chair tournament. Possibly holding the tournament on a Saturday in mid-February at Sands Park. Tournament would include all age groups to allow everyone to be involved. Jeff Mikula to get with City Attorney to ask if the Parks Commission can legally use allocated city funds in the Parks Commission budget to purchase balls, equipment, nets, hot chocolate and printing of flyers. Etc. New Business None Motion by Tomaszewski, second by Swedenborg to adjourn at 6:15 p.m. All in favor. Next meeting date – January 17, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room.
