Manistee Parks Commission
Meeting Of August 18, 2022
A meeting of the Manistee Parks Commission was called to order by the Chair on
Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 5:30pm in the Council Chambers, City Hall 70 Maple
Street Manistee MI 49660.
Members Present Lani Rozga, Kelly Greve, Liz Laskey, Karin Maue, Karen
Peltola
Members Absent Bob Brooks and Tim O’Connor
Others Present Katie Trivisonno, Jeff Mikula, Bil Gambill
Approval of Agenda Kelly Greve motioned to approve agenda, second by Liz
Laskey. All in favor.
Public Comment City Manager Bill Gambill discussed softball field and list of
park upgrades. Jeff Mikula would like to see a parks project
list and set priorities. Lani Rozga offered to help with grant
writing.
Approval of Minutes Lani Rozga motioned to table minutes from July 21, 2022,
second by Karin Maue. All in favor
Correspondence None
Committee Reports Disc Golf update-The baskets will be installed soon. The
park needs a name. Karen Peltola suggested naming the
park after Century Boats or local Charter Boats. The
Commission agreed on the name First Street Beach Family
Disc Golf.
First Street Softball Fields-Jeff Mikula and Bill Gambill met
with the men’s softball league. A committee was formed to
coordinate volunteer efforts. The field fence has been
repaired.
9th Street Boat Launch-Karen Peltola reported on their visit
to Onekama’s ADA kayak/canoe launch. Jeff Mikula
mentioned 9th street boat launch would be the best location
for a future kayak launch site.
5th Avenue Tennis Courts-Nets are installed. Jeff Mikula
stated the court location is not ideal due to the surrounding
sand. He would like to get community feedback before
making any decisions on reconstruction or removal.
Old Business Kelly Greve discussed goals for each park and set priorities,
everyone works together and follow same plan. Jeff Mikula
discusses the new Adirondack Memorial Chairs. First Street
Beach paving project will take place Spring 2023.
Tetherball update-DPW is constructing new posts.
Morton Park-Jeff Mikula gave an update on equipment
purchase. Kelly Greve suggested getting feedback from
residents. A work session has been scheduled for
September 8. The Commission would like to invite members
of the Morton Park community to attend.
First Street Courts-The hoop and backboards need to be
replaced with long term, durable backboards. Benches are
very low to ground and distressed; they will need replacing.
Court line markings should be repainted.
Rite Side Design-They are moving forward with structure
installation this fall. A dedication is scheduled for September.
Lions Pavilion-Liz Laskey would like to see the rental income
and suggested the funds go to the Parks Commission.
New Business Commission Park Tour-Tour is schedule for October 13,
2022 at 5:30.
Round Table Discussion Man Made Lake Porta Johns-Heavily used, Needs additional
servicing throughout the week.
Man Made Lake Lot-Jeff discussed the history of the vacant
lot.
Hampton and Rotary Park Boundaries-Jeff Mikula gave a
visual description of the property lines.
History of a Park-Karin Maue would like to form a committee
to provide a brief history of all the parks.
Adjournment Motion by Lani Rozga, second by Kelly Greve to adjourn
meeting at 7:13pm. All in favor.
Next Meeting Scheduled for September 15th @ 5:30pm in
City Council Chambers.
