MANISTEE PARKS COMMISSION MINUTES
MEETING OF July 21, 2022
A meeting of the Manistee Parks Commission was called to order by the Chair on Thursday July 21, 2022
at 5:30p.m. in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 70 Maple Street, Manistee MI 49660.
MEMBERS PRESENT Lani Rozga, Tim O’Connor, Robert Brooks, Liz Laskey, Karin Maue, Karen Peltola,
Kelly Greve
MEMBERS ABSENT N/A
OTHERS PRESENT Jeff Mikula, Katie Trivisonno, Mickey McCann, Tom Swendenborg, Jane Schimke
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Motion by Tim to nominate Liz as Chair, Second by Kelly. All in favor. Motion by
Lani to nominate Kelly as Vice Chair, Second by Bob. All in favor. Motion by Tim
to nominate Lani as Secretary, Second by Kelly. All in favor. Motion passed.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Modify Agenda, Nominate Officers. MOTION by Robert Brooks second by
Karen P, to approve the agenda as submitted, with modification. All in favor.
Motion passed.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: Tom Swedenborg discussed beaches and tetherball. Mickey gave update on
tetherball, hoping to install soon. He is waiting on posts. Tom wondering if DPW
could construct racks for kayaks and canoes at one of the boat launches. Also, a
storage unit available to lock up kayaks, SUP boards, canoes etc. Jeff Mikula
mentioned 9th street boat launch would be the best option. Subcommittee
Karen Peltola and Lani will visit other communities and see what they are using
for Kayak launch/access sites.
Jane Schimke comments on 1st street beach kite flying area. She is wondering if
the amphitheater project will interfere with kit flying. Tim mentioned the public
park is first come first serve.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: MOTION by Liz, second by Tim, to approve the minutes for the May 19 and
June 16, 2022 as presented. 6 ayes, 1 nay, motion passed.
CORRESPONDENCE Tim will meet with Brian Dunlop and the Men’s Softball group to discuss future
projects and coordinate volunteer groups. DPW applied the stone dust to the
fields and repaired the chain link fence. Press boxes will be removed.
Tim mentioned Jen Tellor’s correspondence regarding her tree trim request.
COMMITTEE REPORTS Disc Golf-Cement pads are scheduled to be poured Friday, July 22, 2022.
Baskets are ordered and should arrive mid-August. Jeff discussed Tom’s efforts
with the new course and hopes to have signage and a park name in place soon.
Lions Pavilion-Mickey gave update on electrical and GFI outlets. Electricians
inspected and replaced GFIs and repaired outdoor Lighting. Liz would like to
continue receiving Pavilion rental revenues. Adirondack chairs are well used and
the City plans to add to the collection. Authentic 321 is donating storage units.
Liz would like to receive updates on Lions Pavilion rental income. The
Commission discusses a possible cancellation policy. Tim requested the Lions
Pavilion floor be resurfaced. Kelly would like to finish painting and power
washing at Pavilion.
OLD BUSINESS Lani provided letter supporting Jen Tellor’s View Shed. Jeff summarizes Jen
Tellers request and does not feel this is a Parks Commission issue. Bob motion
to sign letter of support, Karin M second motion. 6 ayes and 1 nay. Motion
passed.
5th Avenue Tennis Courts. Bob mentioned the courts are unsafe and requested
this space be repurposed.
NEW BUSINESS 5th Avenue “Mural”. Lani asked about the Mural at 5th Avenue Concessions. Jeff
stated the concessioner asked permission and Mural was approved. The Mural
Artist donated her time.
ROUND TABLE 1st Street Basketball Courts update-Courts need new backboards and nets. Liz
mentioned hoops are vandalized the courts need sturdy rims and boards.
Develop master plan for future projects. Kelly sent list to Jeff. Discussion will
continue at the next meeting.
Sculptures by Right Side Design status update. Sculptures are being created and
will be installed at 1st street and Cherry.
Porta Jons at 5th avenue beach need to be cleaned more often. Or possibly add
another portable.
Marina picnic tables are painted. Kelly volunteered to paint Restroom doors.
Public Comment:
Jane commented on 5th Avenue bathhouse and reported Nighttime activity at 1st street beach courts.
Comments by Parks Commissioners:
Bob gave recognition to Kelly for her volunteer efforts. Jeff commented on a few items: North beach
very busy and water tower painting is complete. Memorial Park-The City will have updates on Grant in
September. 1st Street Beach-closure of lower parking lot end of August for construction. Harbor
Dredging is scheduled beginning of August.
