TREE COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES MAY 2, 2011 MEMBERS PRESENT: Pat Sagala, Mary Ann Johnson, Bob Johnson, Bob Bernatche, Pat Williams, Cookie Friedrich, Sue Verheek MEMBERS ABSENT: OTHERS PRESENT: Jack Garber, Staff Liaison Pat Sagala called meeting to order at 5: 00 p. m. Motion by Williams, second by Sagala to accept August 2, 2010 minutes and place on file. Chair Pat Sagala introduced and welcomed our newest member Bob Bernatche to the Tree Commission. OLD BUSINESS NEW BUSINESS 1st, Chalk Art Contest will be held on Friday, July 2011 at Pine & River Street. Children' s age groups will stay the same as in previous years. Bob Johnson will be in charge of outlining the squares for the contest.. Age group 5 - 6 27 squares). Age group 7— 8 40 squares). Age group 9— 10 ( 27 squares). Kathie will contact Dairy Queen for coupons for ice cream cones. Pat S. will pick up books from the Book Store for prizes. US Forestry will need to be contacted for donations for prizes. Discussion on tress that needs to be trimmed at the Elks lodge— Jack informed the commission that these trees were trimmed in the fall of 2010. Stump removal/ grinding will again be done this summer. The City of Manistee has been awarded$ 30,000 in grant money to again plant trees in the right-of way. Monies received: 20, 000 from Urban Forestry Grant Program 10, 000 from DTE Energy Foundation Tree Planting Grant Program Motion by Cookie, second by Sue to offer free trees to residents this year and not charge$ 25. 00 as in the past.. Motion carried. Jack informed that Commission that the City of Manistee received Tree City USA award again this year. Filer Credit Union in celebration of Earth Day 2011 donated $ 300. 00 for purchase of trees that will be planted in the Fifth Avenue Area. Next meeting will be June 6, 2011 at 5: 00 p.m. at City Hall Lunch Room There being no further business, Motion by B. Johnson, second by Rulison that we adjourn. All in favor.
