City of Manistee Tree Commission Meeting Minutes August 12, 2024, 5:00 p.m. City Council Chambers Members Present Gerry Haw, John Helge, Vidar Lerum, Sam Coram, Sarah Stevenson Others Present Katie Trivisonno, DPW A meeting of the Manistee Tree Commission was called to order by Chair Helge on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. Roll Call Approval of Agenda Addition of items to New Business: Tree planting choices and Tree removal city alleyways/utility right of ways. Approved. Citizen/Public Comment Doug Parks, 724 Harbor Drive. Parks inquired on the tree trimming/removal practices in public parks. Approval of Minutes Approval of meeting minutes from July 8, 2024. Unfinished Business Coram gave an update on the tree inventory project. New Business Urban Forestry Grant presentation by Tyler Dula, Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Dula recommended the following: • Community Engagement • Establish a community advisory board • Volunteer and citizen science program • Partnership with local schools and youth • Public awareness campaign • Community feedback mechanism Lerum will be the primary contact representing the Manistee City Tree Commission in the DNR grant request being prepared by Tyler Dula and the Conservation District. Tree Planting Species-Helge selected Haw to review the approved tree species list and recommend up to five species. Haw will report on his recommendations at the next scheduled meeting on Monday, October 14, 2024. Announcements September meeting has been cancelled.
