City of Manistee Tree Commission Meeting Minutes October 14, 5:00 p.m. City Council Chambers Members Present John Helge, Gerry Haw, Sarah Stevenson, Nick Licina Members Excused Vidar Lerum, Sam Coram, David Blair Others Present Jeff Mikula, Katie Trivisonno, DPW A meeting of the Manistee Tree Commission was called to order by Chair Helge on Monday, October 14, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. Roll Call Approval of Agenda Amendment to Unfinished Business, Tree Species List by Gerry Haw. Agenda approved. Public Comment None Approval of Minutes Approval of meeting minutes from August 12, 2024. Unfinished Business Haw presented list of native tree species received from Tyler Dula, Department of Natural Resources. The Commission would like to create a list of 10 trees to include in the City’s tree planting program. New Business Welcome new member Nic Licina. Licinia gave a brief introduction. He inquired about code enforcement for unauthorized tree plantings in the city right of ways. Consideration of tree removal at 218 5th Avenue. Mikula discussed the invasive species Tree of Heaven and would like to contact local arborist Josh Shields about proper treatment. A motion by Stevenson to remove the tree contingent on a proper removal plan by the Department of Natural Resources or Arborist, second by Haw. All in favor. Motion passed. Announcements Mikula will meet with Josh Shields on Oct 29 at Veterans Memorial Park to discuss and identify trees in the north riverwalk area. The 2024 stump removal project is complete, all stumps have been removed. Licina mentioned a dead memorial tree at 1st Street Beach pavilion, needs to be replaced or memorial stone should be relocated.
