Historic Preservation Advisory Meeting Minutes - Final August 22, 2019
Board
1. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chairman Marty Thomas at 6:00 p.m.
Board Members present: Marty Thomas, Cindy Gardner, Carol McKenna, Chris Ohan,
and James Leggs.
Board Member absent: Connie McGough
City Staff present: Museum Manager Jessica Baber, Director of Library Services
Yolanda Botello
Citizens Present: Scott Bowman, Annette Hamill, and Linda Pressley
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM JUNE MEETING
The Board discussed the minutes. The changes requested were in the Member
Comment section. The annual meeting on October 12 is hosted by the Mansfield
Historical Society, not the Museum and it will take place at the Great Room at the
MISD Administration Building, not the High School. Carol McKenna made a motion to
approve the minutes as corrected. James Leggs seconded the motion and all voted in
favor.
3. CITIZENS COMMENTS
Scott Bowman introduced himself. He is on the city’s Parks board and has been
following the Historic Preservation Advisory Board since it was announced. He has an
interest in the Man House project as it borders the Dog Park.
4. DISCUSS POTENTIAL PROJECTS WITH THE HISTORIC LANDMARK
COMMISSION
Jessica told the group that the Commission has appointed two members to be on the
Historic Preservation Month Committee to assist with planning events for next May.
Those members are Mark Walker and David Littlefield. Two members are needed from
the Advisory Board to join them on the committee. Cindy Gardner and Chris Ohan
volunteered to join the committee. Jessica will pass along their contact information to
the Landmark Commission.
5. DISCUSS MILL STONE AT MELLOW MUSHROOM
Mike Leasor had planned to reach out to the Slawsons, who own the Mellow Mushroom,
and see if they are interested in loaning or donating the Mill Stone to the Museum.
Mike was not able to attend the meeting. Hopefully, he will be able to give his update
next month
6. MAN HOUSE MUSEUM UPDATE
Phoenix 1 Restoration and Construction has been hired as the contractors for the Man
House restoration project. They met with city staff and the architects from Tom Malone
Architects and have begun drawing up plans. A portion of the siding was removed on
the cabin portion of the house and the original wood is still in good condition. The

project is projected to be completed in January 2020.
Tom Leach has been volunteering to help identify historically appropriate furniture for
the Museum. The collecting process is going well.
As of now, funding for phases 3 and 4 of the project are in the budget for 2020. This
includes building an information center, restroom facilities, an amphitheater, and
relocating cabins to the site. The final 2020 budget for the city should be approved by
mid-September.
7. MUSEUM AND MAN HOUSE MISSION STATEMENTS
Jessica passed out draft mission statements for the Historical Resources
Division, the Man House Museum and the Mansfield Historical Museum. She asked
that everyone take a look at them over the next month and that the Board discuss
them at the September meeting.
* MUSEUM COMMITTEES
The Museum is forming three committees to assist the staff with some of the
larger projects at the Museum and Man House: a Collection Committee, and Exhibits
Committee, and a Programs Committee. Jessica asked that Board members consider
joining one of the Committees. So far, Cindy Gardner and James Leggs have
volunteered for the Collection Committee, Chris Ohan has volunteered for the Exhibits
Committee and Carol McKenna volunteered for the Programs Committee.
8. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Board Members have been invited to participate in listening sessions for the new
downtown plan. The meetings are at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on September 12. A letter with
additional information was distributed for all Board members.
The next meeting will be September 26.
9. ADJOURN
The meeting was adjourned by Marty Thomas at 6:32 p.m.
