MAPLE GROVE LAKE QUALITY COMMISSION MINUTES April 17, 2024 CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Lake Quality Commission (LQC) was held on April 17, 2024 in the Mayor’s Conference Room at the Maple Grove Government Center, 12800 Arbor Lakes Parkway, Maple Grove. Chairperson Fahrenbruch called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m. Commissioners Present: Becky Fahrenbruch – Chair - Eagle Lake Sharon Martin-Kotula – Edward Lake George Schneider – Rice Lake Nancy Bergstrand – Weaver Lake Joe Ruegsegger – At Large Steve Lane – Cedar Island Lake Commissioners Absent: Brennon O’Callaghan, Vice Chair – Fish Lake Others Present: Kristy Janigo, City Council Liaison Derek Asche, City of Maple Grove Mark Lahtinen, City of Maple Grove Connor McComas – Blue Water Science APPROVAL OF Minutes of the March 20, 2024 LQC meeting were presented. MINUTES MOTION TO APPROVE by Lane, second by Bergstrand. With all in favor the motion was APPROVED. AREA REPORTS Edward, Sharon Martin-Kotula – Preparations are being made for the LQC lake tour of Edward Lake. The annual lake cleanup is scheduled for April 20. Mark Lahtinen – The city has seen a lot of rain this spring with 1.64 inches in the most recent storms. Rice Lake, George Schneider – No fish kills this winter. The Rice Lake Area Association annual meeting will be on May 7, 2024. Weaver Lake, Nancy Bergstrand – Lots of ducks and the docks are being installed. Council Liaison Kristy Janigo – The Lake Improvement Program passed Council as did the hiring of a new Forester.  Eagle Lake, Becky Fahrenbruch – Many animals are around including loons, eagles, great blue heron, and muskrats. Fishing has been slow this spring. Forty-five attendees at the annual meeting this year where Diane Spector was present to discuss the alum treatment. Cedar Island Lake, Steve Lane – Lots of algae has formed on the lake already this year. WATER OBSTACLE Asche presented the annual water obstacle permits for Fish and Cedar Island lakes. PERMITS Asche noted Rice Lake does not anticipate an application in 2024. MOTION TO APPROVE by Lane, second by Schneider. With all in favor the motion was APPROVED. 2023 WATER Connor McComas of Blue Water Science presented on the 2023 Maple Grove Water QUALITY REPORT Quality Report on area lakes. McComas noted lower water levels in 2023 when compared to the average. Cedar Island had low total phosphorus in 2023 possibly due to a fish kill which would allow zooplankton to thrive. It is also possible nutrient loading is primarily coming from the watershed rather than internal sources. Cook Lake and Rice Lake seemed to be high in total phosphorus while Eagle and Pike were trending better. Fish (post alum treatment) and Weaver were sampled by Three Rivers Park District and had good water quality. INFORMATIONAL Asche reported that street sweeping had been completed citywide. The sweeping ITEMS took 414 hours and picked-up over 400 cubic yards of material. FUTURE May 15, 2024 - Boat Tour Edward Lake MEETING: ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 7:33 pm.
