(1) ROLL CALL
Present: 5- Vice-Chair Katie O'Hara, Ruth McCann, Elaine Lancaster, Maria Lamb and
Chairman Burson
Absent: 2- Russ Rakestraw and Tony Ferrara
(2) APPROVAL OF AGENDA
MOTION by Vice-Chair O'Hara, seconded by Member McCann, that this be
approved. MOTION CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE:
Yes: 5- Vice-Chair O'Hara, Member McCann, Member Lancaster, Member Lamb and
Chairman Burson
Not Present: 2- Member Rakestraw and Member Ferrara

(4) STAFF COMMUNICATIONS
a. Plastic straws on the beach
Ms. O'Hara stated plastic straw problems still exist from last clean-up date April 30th.
Joseph Fischer, General Manager, Marriott Ocean Beach Resort stated they will continue
using plastic straws on frozen drinks and changing to biodegradable straws for soft
drinks. Also, adding more trash cans closer to the water.
Andrew Sorenson, General Manager, Crystal Shores supporting beach clean ups with
weekly program activities on holidays. They will only give out straws upon request, and
eventually will use biodegradable straws.
Conservancy has awareness classes on sea turtles, shorebirds, and litter. Adding
signage on boardwalk and trash cans on beach.
Ms. Lamb reported Nick Wagner, Director, Marriott will use biodegradable straws.
Ms. Malloy inviting Eagles Nest & Charter House condominiums to educate on straw
usage.
b. City's Beach Stewardship Program
Hotels contacted Ms. Malloy to join program. Police Dept. & Tony Ferrara training June
15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Community Room at City Hall or Police Department. Once location

is confirmed, Ms. O'Hara sending email blast to inform community of training date.
Chief Schettino continuing sending monthly reports on beach activity to City Council. Two
CSO officers patrol beaches four (4) hours a day. He is checking dredging project safety
concerns.
Ms. Malloy suggested beach stewards use shirt pin or visor, instead of t-shirt and will
speak to hotels to confirm.
c. Beach Schedule Updates
Ms. Malloy had no schedules updates.
Beach clean up is after Memorial Day on May 31st at 6:00 p.m. starting at South Beach.
Volunteers can join beach clean ups with MICA on July 5th at Residents Beach and
South Beach.
d. Environmental Update
Reviewed report from Chadd Chutz on sea turtles, lighting and shorebirds.
e. Goals for 2016
Chair Burson inquired on budget to use to add to FY17 budget requesting to City Council.
Ms. Malloy stated FY16 budget was $2200.00, balance to date is $1700.00 fiscal year
ending September 30, 2016.
Budget workshop allocation will be submitted for request July 18th, public hearing in
September.
FY17 Budget Request Wish List: To keep $2200.00, budget for T-Shirts, beach signs,
brochures, flyers, portable canvas advertising, incentive awards and educational
materials
(5) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS
a. Beach Clean Up T-Shirts
Ms. McCann raised $5,100 and ordered Love Your Beach t-shirts.
b. Beach Education Outreach
Ms. Lancaster scheduled educational program with crafts for Camp Mackle on August 4,
2016 at 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Eighty (80) participants are expected.
c. Goals 2015 - Progress/Status
Reviewed ongoing FY15-16 goals.
d. Budget 2016-2017
Continuing same goals as previous year.
Add goal: Outreach program to civic and condo groups. Request follow-up report on

fertilizer ordinance.
Attend other committee meetings for updates.
