City's Beach Stewardship Program Ruth McCann arrived at 9:01 a.m. Member O'Hara stated Beach Stewardship Training/Refresher Course (protect beaches) is Sept 28th in Community Room 9:00 -10:00 a.m., public invited. b. Beach Schedule Updates M.I.C.A. is scheduled for October 15th at 8:00 a.m. Clean up in November is sponsored by Optimist. (5) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS a. Plastic Straws on Beach Mr. Chustz was to start his update communications under Item #4., instead started under Item 5.a. Mr. Chustz presented beach turtle update numbers on 79 nests, 46 hatchlings, and disorientations from lighting. The season for lights out is May 1 - October 31 which is a law by City, State, and Federal. Shorebird (terns, laughing gull) deaths were reported. Sewerage overflow from storm rains possibly impacting shorebirds. Condo need recommendations on type of lighting to use. Beach water quality reports (obtained from FL Depart. of Health) are good, One poor reading from last storm was from spillage from high rain. Flooding due to tides at Tigertail Beach. Dune vegetation removal is illegal, will happen after sea turtle nesting. Member O'Hara stated last international coastal clean up found some bio degradable straws on Tigertail Beach. Member Ferrara (Monday) found mixture of clear plastic straws in front of Marriott and Ocean Resort. b. Beach Clean-up T-Shirt Member McCann passed out t-shirt samples from Gear Promotions. Options are, Vortex material is $2.99 each with extra cost for logo. $5.99 for dry cooler shirt, $2.99 for 50/50, and $3.29 for Gildan 100% cotton lighter weight. Will order lighter shirts for sponsors and committee on next order. Ms. Malloy replenished orange Beach Stewardship shirt supply. c. Beach Education Outreach Member Lamb stated next program on October 5th sponsored by Calusa Gardens at Tommie Barfield Elementary at 3:00 p.m. All members try to attend. Member O'Hara presented educational program slide show "Ways To Love Your Beach", which is aimed for children. Members suggested changes to brochure: Add bike racks at entrances Provide presentation to TBE and other school teachers Present to girl scouts MOTION by Member Rakestraw, TO PURCHASE 200 TRI-FOLD BROCHURES, seconded by Member Ferrara, that this be approved. South Beach Shadow Box Repair Member O'Hara stated Ms. Malloy checked into broken box, it has been repaired. Other boxes at South Beach and Madiera need to be replaced. (7) NEW BUSINESS a. Meet & Greet City Councilor Brown arrived at 9:39 a.m. Chair Burson stated "Meet and Greet" ties in with beach clean ups. Recommendations for 10 minute topics: Member O'Hara received quote for tent signage. BchAC members can answer questions at clean up dates. Member O'Hara will advertise through her "Love Your Beach" Facebook page. Hold quarterly meetings, next in December. Get ideas from Elaine. Involve hotels and condos. Keep on old business item next month agenda. Member Rakestraw thanked Member Ferrara for Beach Steward reports. Member McCann will follow up on overgrown vegetation, foot wash repair and overflow of trash cans at South Beach. Chair Brown recommended to contact Donna Fiala, Collier County Commissioner on beach issues. (8) PUBLIC COMMENT None.
