City of Marco Island Florida 51 Bald Eagle Drive Marco Island, Florida cityofmarcoisland.com Meeting Minutes - Final Wednesday, January 18, 2017 9:00 AM Community Room Beach Advisory Committee Beach Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - Final January 18, 2017 (1) ROLL CALL Present: 6- Russ Rakestraw, Vice-Chair Katie O'Hara, Maria Lamb, Gene Burson, Tony Ferrara and Elaine Lancaster Absent: 1- Ruth McCann (2) APPROVAL OF AGENDA MOTION by Member Rakestraw, seconded by Member Ferrara, that this be approved. MOTION CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE: Yes: 6- Member Rakestraw, Vice-Chair O'Hara, Member Lancaster, Member Lamb, Member Ferrara and Chairman Burson Not Present: 1- Member McCann (3) APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION by Member Lancaster to amend the date on item 5.c. to February 12, 2017 and change word under 6.a. 2nd paragraph to theme, seconded by Vice-Chair O'Hara, that this be approved. MOTION CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE: Yes: 6- Member Rakestraw, Vice-Chair O'Hara, Member Lancaster, Member Lamb, Member Ferrara and Chairman Burson Not Present: 1- Member McCann ID 17-1258 Attachments: Draft BchAC Meeting Minutes - December 21.2016 (4) STAFF COMMUNICATIONS Ruth McCann Arrived at 9:08 a.m. a Beach Schedule Updates - Samantha Malloy Next two dates are scheduled at South Beach at 8:00 a.m. There were no changes to the schedule. (5) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS a. City's Beach Stewardship Program Member Ferrara reported on activities and on going efforts on the beach. New very fine sand was installed by Collier County from Crystal Shores to Cape Marco. Wildlife had decrease in black skimmers from last year. Plantings on South Beach entrance is complete. Parking lot finished, stripping yesterday. Vice Chair O'Hara stated gnats did not come in with new sand, they came from the Gulf. Small black flies are also another issue. The bug situation will be followed up by Member O'Hara. Member Rakestraw inquired when Beach Steward training is scheduled. Ms. Malloy is City of Marco Island Florida Page 1 Beach Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - Final January 18, 2017 waiting to see which new committee members will be on board to schedule the training. Chair Burson saw gigantic holes in sand. Hopefully, rakers will fill them in. New shrubs at entrance, look better but bushes need to be consistent. Vice Chair O'Hara stated fabric under landscaping is showing, needs additional covering. Beach Clean-up T-shirts Member McCann has new supply of light weight shirts for committee members. c. Beach Education Outreach - Presentation Feb. 12, 2017 Chair Burson will try to make presentation (if not, possibly Member McCann or Ferrara) on February 12th event at 6:00 p.m. Flyers/beach brochures will be handed out to attendees. Ms. Malloy will keep City Manager informed regarding BchAC's mission statement to coincide on City website, by committees reporting to City Manger. All committees will keep their own separate committees, no committee will be added together. Member O'Hara stated she is not qualified to take on wildlife, only environmental issues. We presently have emphasis on wildlife for beaches, birds or turtles. d. Goals 2017 Progress/Status Chair Burson inquired if members had ideas/areas to cover. Members will wait to see who is reinstated on committee after City Council meeting on January 23, 2017. e. Budget - 2017 Due to budget funds remaining, Vice Chair O'Hara suggested ordering (250-300) sun glass cleaners from Bruce Gear (ordered t-shirts), printed in any color showing Marco Island map on one side and clean up rules on other side. . Yoga instructor donated $240.00 from her YOGA class to use for the sun glass cleaners or other items needed instead of a tent. BchAC members approved for Member Ferrara to purchase two bird boards to costing under $100.00. (6) OLD BUSINESS a. Meet & Greet Member Lamb stated to invite other committees to attend BchAC monthly meetings or have a social meeting with food and drinks. Bring ideas to to next month meeting to involve others. (7) NEW BUSINESS Member Ferrara stated Marco Island Sunrise Rotary is next Tuesday morning for presentation on Beach Stewardship Program. City of Marco Island Florida Page 2 Beach Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - Final January 18, 2017 Chair Burson was asked by his appointment Councilman to resign. (8) PUBLIC COMMENT 1 person in attendance. Vivian Rakestraw requested sitting benches along entire beach. She was informed to contact Collier County. Write a letter to the editor or Donna Fiala, County Commissioner. Upon lightning on the beaches, Police department drives by to inform beach goers to leave.
