Chadd Chustz Mr. Chustz reported good water quality on all beaches for March and April. FWC has educational article for protecting shorebirds (threatened species). He will post article on City website, need hand outs to educate resorts and condos. In 2016, CWA, Marco Pass had largest ground colony of shorebirds nesting on northern side of Tigertail, near Hideaway Beach lagoon. Working with FWC educational program to protect pelicans on entanglement program. If pelican is hooked, reel in, never cut line, secure wings/mouth, cover eyes with towel, check hook, cut barb - do not rip out. For injured wildlife, call 239-262-2273 (Wildlife Hospital at Conservancy of Southwest Florida) put in box securely. Sea turtle nesting season coming up May 1st - Oct 31st. Lights need to be turned off after 9:00 p.m., minimize flashlights, electronic lights and photography lighting. Mr. Chustz will send today's slides (of today's meeting) to BchAC via email. Mr. Chustz will check further on water quality results as requested by Member Rakestraw. (5) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS a. City's Beach Stewardship Program Committee continuously receiving beach steward reports from Tony Ferrara (past member). His latest concern was service dog on beach. City of Marco Island Florida Page 1 Beach Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - Final April 19, 2017 b. Beach Education Outreach Member Sturgis met with Katie O'Hara to discuss program. c. MIPD Beach Patrol Report Chief Schettino reported monthly patrol activity also posted (monthly) on City Council agenda's. February had number of incidents. Patrol has no set schedule, different times and days are patrolled. Drinking is allowed but no glass. Continue to see more straws on the beach, than bottles. Spring break is busy, extra patrol and night patrol for all to abide by rules. Last year arrested 4, this year only arrested 2 beach goers due to intoxication. Patrols monitor water skis, educate beach vessels/boaters on no wake zone, need to be 750' off the beach. When dogs are seen on beach, limit contact with owner, try to educate on beach rules. There is no license system for service dogs, no proof dog is a service dog. Member Rakestraw recommended Citizens Police Academy, excellent program. d. Collier County Parks Update Member Lamb stated Collier County ordered five (5) re-enforced 1,500lb. non-staining benches for South Beach, waiting for installation date. She researched lightning detectors for Collier Country Parks & Recreation at Mackle Park, Winterberry Park, City Hall and Residents Beach. Need to discuss and present to City Council for approval. Collier County will fund a lightning detection system at South Beach. Member Rakestraw suggested committee keep eye on benches for staining/sealing. MICA seals benches yearly, committee will keep eye on benches. e. 2017 Goals - Progress/Status Member Hartzler stated clean-up is at South Beach on May 23rd, 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. hosted by JW Marriott. Chair McCann stated next beach clean-up is May 13, 2017, will be handing out small schedule. Will post a bulletin pamphlet in grocery/stores on island to inform public. Chair McCann educated Madeira condo last season with a presentation. Member McChesney also meeting with condo managers in future and will encourage them to schedule a presentation from committee. (6) OLD BUSINESS None. (7) NEW BUSINESS Shorebird training (identifying birds nesting) is April 22, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Tigertail Beach. Member Strungis inquired about criteria for beaches and hotel policing water ski's, or leaking gas from water skis on beach. Each hotel is aware of criteria for beach vendors. Committee needs to contact Mr. City of Marco Island Florida Page 2 Beach Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - Final April 19, 2017 Chustz with hotel not abiding by permit requirements. a. Camp Mackle kids - July 12, 2017 Past member, Katie O'Hara created presentation with "Love Your Beach" brochure. Presentation scheduled for Parks & Recreation Department on July 12th at Family Church on Winterberry Drive. Volunteer members will check schedules and confirm attendance with discussion at next meeting. Chair McCann will contact City Clerk regarding replacement of committee member. (8) PUBLIC COMMENT There was one person in attendance in audience. Debby Roddy, Vice-Chair Coastal Advisory Committee (CAC), reported there is hope the re-grade project will begin after the turtle season. Beach Resiliency County project has no funding but CAC proposes to increase dunes from 5' to 6', and 50' more dry sand on beach. Needs approval.
