Staff Report - Chadd Chustz Mr. Chustz reported: . Florida Dept of Health water report for March and April are good. No red tide. . Shorebird and sea turtle nesting season is now. Condominiums on board with low lighting on beaches, it will be monitored. Nesting season is May 1st - Oct 31st. . FWC has education materials on shorebird etiquette, add to City website. . FWC crow control (harassed shorebird nesting) was successful. . Algae bloom not hazardous from Naples Pier to Marco Island beaches. As requested by Member McChesney, Mr. Chustz will forward his slide presentation to BchAC. Member Rakestraw inquired about water quality requested at City Council meeting. Mr. Chustz required more research on sea grass, mammals and fish with more quantitative results. He will be presenting results from Collier County at next Waterways Advisory Committee meeting. Big Marco Pass area had largest shorebird ground colony in 2016. MIPD Beach Patrol Report Chair McCann commented on dogs at Sand Dollar distrubing nesting birds. Police Dept. was contacted by Audobon. Dogs are not allowed on beaches. Member Lamb commented on disturbing dog trend, police giving warning tickets on weekends. Call MIPD if dog on beach. Community service officer had difficulty walking from Tigertail to end. Need proposal to fund a manned kiosk stationed on beach 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. shift. Should we present to Chief? What can we do? Member McChesney stated if high tide, vehicles could go up might go further up on the beach. He will follow-up with Chief Schettino on procedures of driving vehicles on beach. Chair McCann stated a beach clean up is scheduled on December 2, 2017 from MI Woman's Club. She met with Hilton Manager, he is interested in cleaning beaches. The Manager was not aware of straws on beach. Ruth will follow-up. Ms. Malloy found more straws and broken glass at South Beach, and near Hilton. Member Hartzler stated South Beach clean up is scheduled on May 23rd at 5:30 - 7:00 p.m from J.W. Marriott. ID 17-1636 MIPD Beach Patrol Report Attachments: March 2017 Beach Patrol Report (5) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS a. City Beach Stewarship Program Chair McCann reported Audobon report was enlightening. She will check back with Tony Ferrara to get additional reports. Member Lamb reported more crows this year along beach. Trash cans were spring loaded. b. Beach Education Outreach Presentation scheduled for Camp Mackle Kids on July 12th. Ms. Gengenbach, Mackle Park Recreation Leader will have crafts for event. c. Beach Clean-up Schedule Condominium managers/residents are on alert for cleaning beaches. Member Lamb asked BchAC other ways to increase participation of volunteers other than advertising. Get contact information from each volunteer. Send thank you notes to volunteers, organizations, and sponsors. Member McChesney stated Publix Managers requested to let them know if more volunteers are needed. Flyers are handed out at each beach clean-up date to various people driving up and down beach. Good to have sign up sheet for reminders with follow up. ID 17-1634 BchAC Clean up Schedule Attachments: 2017 Beach Clean Up Schedule as of 5.9.17 d. Collier County Parks Update Member Lamb reported three (3) benches on South beach were vandalized. Collier County assessed situation, they are purchasing five (5) concrete benches on April 15th, awaiting installation date. Member Lamb will inform Ms. Mastronardi when installation photos are taken with Collier County. e. 2017 Goals - Progress/Status This item already been covered. (6) OLD BUSINESS None. (7) NEW BUSINESS None. a. Camp Mackle Kids - July 12, 2017 See above 5.b. Will speak to Sand Dollar Manager along with Chief Schettino. Reviewed member schedules for July/August meetings. BchAC July meeting is cancelled. (8) PUBLIC COMMENT There was one person in audience. Gene Burson, resident and past BchAC Chair stated Tony Ferrara did great job with Beach Stewardship Program, now time for BchAC members to take over. Need new volunteer sponsors for beach clean-up, and send thank you letter to new sponsors. Great publicity for J.W. Marriott helping with beach cleaning. Chair McCann stated MICA Wave Newsletter is available at MICA office. Member Lamb stated need monthly update for City Beach Stewards (other than Tony Ferrara). Need to push more out to public. Partner with J.W. Marriott and members can become beach stewards. Ms. Malloy stated Ms. Litzan received an application for new committee member, she will check the status.
