(9) OLD BUSINESS
ID 22-2239 Marco-in-Bloom Review
Member Eby provided his assessment of the 2022 Marco-In-Bloom competition as the leader of this year's
effort, and he offered several recommendations to improve the execution of next's year's competition.
Among his recommendations were:
1) eliminating the need for citizen submissions to include photos of the nominated properties, and;
2) providing a means for the online submission of nominated properties.
Additionally, Member Eby precipitated Committee discussion on:
1) how to classify 'professionally-installed, personally-maintained' properties in future competitions, and;
2) allowing 2022 'runner-up' winners to re-apply in 2023.
No Motion or Vote was brought forward on the items discussed.
ID 22-2240 Arbor Day Celebration
Member Tobin reported on the April 29th Arbor Day event on Marco Island, and she expressed
appreciation for the representation from City leadership at the event. Overall, it was a great celebration.
For future Arbor Day celebrations, Member Tobin proposed that:
1) a new Beautification Advisory Committee member take the lead in promoting and coordinating the
activity, and;
2) a plaque for the newly-planted Arbor Day tree be created to commemorate the event.
Public Works Department liaison Mike Daniel agreed to investigate the creation of a plaque, but
requested that the Committee provide him with how that plaque should read. He also requested that any
photos of the event be forwarded to Ms. Diedre Wint (dwint@cityofmarcoisland.com) for placement of the
Committee's webpage.
Chair Connelly asked that the selection of the Committee's 2023 Arbor Day Celebration project leader be
discussed and voted upon at the Committee's next meeting on June 1st.
ID 22-2241 Beach Access Beautification Project
Member Cummings reviewed a written description of the proposed Beach Access Beautification Project
issues, goals and benefits with the Committee and solicited Committee inputs.
Among the inputs were:
1) including educational materials and/or signage that can promote better beachgoer behavior and respect
for the flora and fauna of the beach and dune area;
2) planting high-growing clusias along the pathway to obscure the view of the hotel utility and maintenance
structures;
3) soliciting input from the Naples Botanical Garden staff on plants and buffer elements that can help
make the pathway more appealing, and;
4) a recommendation that a professional designer be engaged to better design the desired functional
elements along the beach access pathway.

ID 22-2242 10,000 Trees in 10 Years Initiative
Member Leaser reported that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Naples Botanical Garden
is still awaiting approval and signature.
Additionally, along with City Council Becky Irwin, Member Leaser reviewed the proposed objectives,
strategy and tactics for the program, highlighting the plan to:
1) begin by implementing a one-year pilot effort before year end and prior to full implementation, and;
2) configure the effort to be 'self-funding', and not require City-budgeted funds to initially execute
The Committee discussed:
1) hiring/assigning a project manager to the effort;
2) the implementation timeline;
3) obtaining inputs from the Naples Botanical Garden team, and;
