COMMISSIONERS CITY OF MARLBOROUGH Mike Cabral RECREATION DEPARTMENT William Doherty 239 Concord Road Robert Kays: Chairman Marlborough, Massachusetts 01752 Melynda Gallagher Tel (508) 624-6925 TTY (508) 460-3610 Shanissa Sampson Mark Vital John Welch DIRECTOR Charles Thebado PROGRAM MANAGER Joseph Mulvey November 9, 2022 Pursuant to notice duly filed with the City Clerk, a meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was held at 5:30pm at the Recreation Commission Office. Present were Commission Members: Chairman Kays, Commissioner Sampson, Commissioner Gallagher, and Commissioner Cabral. Also attending Recreation Director Charles Thebado and Program Manager Joseph Mulvey. Approval of minutes 09-28-22 On a motion duly made by Commissioner Gallagher and seconded by Commissioner Sampson, it was unanimously: VOTED: To accept the 09-28-22. Parks Report: Mr. White was not able to attend the Commission meeting. Mr. Thebado gave the parks report on his behalf: • Final fertilizer application to all fields is complete. • Parks is continuing with removal of leaves and fall clean ups. • Ward Park vandalism has been an issue this summer. • In the process to build a Dek hockey rink at Ghiloni Park. Recreation Report - Charles Thebado, Director: Mr. Thebado gave the following Recreation Department report: • The Horribles Parade was a success. We had thirty-five scarecrows on Union Common. Four winners were chosen for our scarecrow contest. • Work has begun at Ghiloni Park for the city’s new Dek Hockey Rink. • We held our first paint night at Jericho which was a success. • Our track program finished a few weeks ago with tremendous positive feedback from parents. Colleen Marinelli our youth track program coordinator did an outstanding job. We had approximately 25-30 participants. • Started publicizing our Summer Lifeguard recruitment through our Facebook page with our first lifeguard course taking place during Christmas break. We had our first interview candidate this afternoon. • Our soccer, t-ball, and mini sports programs are finishing up at the moment and were well attended. • Home for the Holidays will be on Friday, December 2nd. Page 2 • Marlborough Trail Committee will be holding a walk after Thanksgiving, giving residents an opportunity to come out and see a portion on the Panther Trail. • Winter programs will be starting early January with sign-ups taking place sometime in the next week. We are in the process finalizing all winter programs. • We had a meeting with MAYF regarding turf rules and tournaments. • Stopped by Shrewsbury and checked their cricket field. Chris White and I are planning to visit a few more cricket fields in the near future. • Meeting soon with DPW regarding wading pools. • Meeting with the Mayor on November 15th, regarding Ward Park Pickleball courts. The Commission thanked Mr. Thebado for his report. On a motion made by Commissioner Cabral and seconded by Commissioner Gallagher, it was unanimously: All in favor. Motion carried.
